I wasn’t sure what I wanted the Kirin/Qilin companion piece to be. At first I thought a Pi Yao but after some thought I figured why not pair the lord of the beasts with the ruler of the skies aka the Fenghuang or Hou-ou or a plethora of other names depending on where in the world we are talking about. You’ll commonly see this creature referred to as the “Chinese Phoenix” although it’s not a good comparison technically since these two legendary birds don’t share much in common beyond a similar appearance. The Fenghuang is the marker of new eras, harbinger of good things, lord of birds, mortal enemy or companion to dragons.
