Description Yep, this is the finished piece. I hope to get some up close shots of some areas because the painting is just... well... I'm not entirely sure if I did that! I had two lights on me, one yellow(-ish) and one red. Basically I was just having fun, but they really helped! I did this entirely in front of a mirror (cept for the initial lay in, you can see some of the charcoal) and it took me a very, very long time. I did it in the lobby of my dorm room and I was down there pulling all nighters every night. Luckily there is a coke machine and a coffee place not far away.

For the most part I'm very pleased. Very few nitpicky things I'm worried about (which is highly unusual).

I had a friend who was national champian Korean stick-fighter, and I have fond childhood memories of getting hit my those kinds of swords!

Beautiful work!

PS Thanks for the kind comments on the 1 Million Masterpiece site! Your a real cornerstone for that effort!

Awesome! Korean stick-fighter champion friend! Those are always fond memories... of course with us it was just sticks

Thank you!

I think that it is such a good idea that I just have to do all I can to get people to join. I'm kind of odd about the discussion board, but I am used to getting responses in a message center!

Only crit is that the foot on our left doesn't look completley planted. I know it's finished- but for future ref- Maybe move the heel to the other side of the foot by just a little bit to increase balance. I like this overall, nice to see some solid traditional stuff! Keep it up!

You think so? Hmm. It was dark, so I could have looked for some more darks within darks. though, it might not have been planted. When I first did it I was thinking of it planted, but for some reason (probably no sleep, the shoes were the last I did) I might have changed it. I'll look at it again and see. It doesn't really bug me when it's hanging on the wall though.

Very nicely done. Makes a good impression. Couple of things. The location of the pit of the neck and the angle of the clavicles, the length of the left upper and lower arm and phalanges, and an exaggerated shoulder to shoulder slope without any obvious twist in the rib cage. Also, a bulging of the skirt even though the knees are not bent and the hips aren't turned. I suspect you worked over days and the pose changed on you.

But still, great colorwork and impression and my guess is a good likeness etc....

Violinagin In reply to lwood1 [2006-05-24 18:14:31 +0000 UTC]

I've actually corrected the neck, but as I don't have a camera I can't show that I fixed it. Here's a link to the only photo reference I have: [link] Doesn't look a whole lot like the photograph, but I did make note of all the changes I made. The skirt is a hakama and it looks like that. Well, at least mine does. It hangs like that when it's not even on a person

lwood1 In reply to Violinagin [2006-05-24 18:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Very nice. Good artistic interpretation. The skirt hangs from the hips but I see an unusual bulge on the side around the knees. You are taller than the portrait. The pose was challenging because of the slope of the vertebra and the perspective. Great job still. This is difficult work so congrats.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Violinagin In reply to lwood1 [2006-05-24 18:40:05 +0000 UTC]

That's the way the Hakama hangs. That "bulge" is just the way the fabric is because of the sewn in pleats and how I've been using it for martial arts. It also hangs from the hips from the photo, but it's above the hips in the painting. The legs also look shorter because it's such a large painting that the legs need to be foreshortened because in person you look down at them. I also did it to a lesser extent in the face, but in the other direction.

I have awful time management, I get distracted too easily and put off task

This summer I'm going to be able to paint for leisure again, not done that properly in about two years

I love your art though, every piece looks wonderful, though sometimes when I'm working, the standard slips cos I just cant wait to finish it >_<

Hi There!
You have just earned yourself an O.D.D. feature ! congrats!
ODDS (oibyrd's daily deviations) are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure and also, to introduce the more popular artists to the new/overlooked deviants. I prefer to showcase ALL artwork that I love (and that includes popular artists) in order to create a non-biased feature of the talent on dA Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists . If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note and I will remove you from the list. Cheers! Sandi xoxo

Others either didn't speak english. There was only one person so far that I wanted to strangle for being so damn rude LOL.

I am very happy to have you as a feature! xoxoxo keep up the great work! this painting really blows me away...the details are top notch.
