A Spitfire pilot might tell you that the German bomber crews were also shooting back
Reading accounts by fighter pilots, it seems that against individual bombers or small formations, the first thing you want to do is kill the gunner(s). Then you can break the airplane without worrying about being shot at.

Spitfires rarely went after bombers. Hurricanes did, mostly because those were better gun platforms. Spitfires went after fighters more often. Also, remember that for every Spitfire, there were at least 3 Hurricanes.

Yes that's true but it doesn't change the fact that spitfire pilots went for bomber in many occasions, they wouldn't waste any opportunity.

That was the idea but in battle such things are often dreamed about, most often hurricanes went after the fighters as well and scored more kills than the spit and was the real saviour of UK, the spits were a bit more rare and they too often attacked the bombers as well. In some situations they were alone and the Hurricanes were late or got lost etc so either leave the bombers or attack them, I know which one I choose.
