Description This was taken about the same time as Everglades Storm was. Since they are both somewhat similar in their distant views I decided to try to play around with the tones of this one by changing the levels and using dodge and burn in the clouds. I really like how you can see the area where the storm had started to let loose compared to the far distance where it was still typical Florida sunshine. It is not my usual style to do this kind of editing technique, but it was fun experimenting...

Hehehe I was going to say, this was SO taken in Florida Anyone who has seen this sight in person will definitely have a flashback once they've seen this, great capture/editing!

It is an interesting style that you've employed here, an editing technique that I often use. Sometimes balancing a photo and making elements more intense can have the opposite effect, by making the image look unrealistic. You've avoided that though, although if those clouds were any richer compared to those more traditional orange hues off in the distance it might have fallen apart. An excellent capture and some wonderful scenery and composition.

Thank you John This was the first (and I believe, only) time that I had tried this with one of my submissions, but I really had a lot of fun with it.. this is definitelty not an easy technique to do since it is easy to go overboard, or not far enough.. I always enjoy others' submissions with this style of post processing, but I will probably leave it more to the pros in the future (but don't hold me to that, lol)

Congrats. I think your dodging/burning operation was a success, but then again I'm a sucker for dark, stormy scenes such as this, so who knows. What I find interseting about this photo is that despite the (apparent) relatively low light conditions, you can still detect the vibrant greens of the grass/reeds in the fore- and middle-grounds, which adds a touch of ambient surrealness to the lighting. Did you use a fill-flash on the foreground? It almost looks like you did, but I can't quite tell. Critique: I think if you had shuffled to the right (or the left) a bit, you would have come up with a much stronger composition. At that point you would have the tall grass/reeds sloping down to meet the unobscured sunset and at the same time you would have shaken up an otherwise very center-balanced composition. As it is though, I think you have a eye-catching piece when it comes to contrast and natural lighting. You should experiment like this more often!

Thank you very much James I actually did not use any flash here, usually I dislike using any, especially with nature scenes, I think I was just lucking with the natural light and that the stand of grass was already a shade of bright green.. I really do with I could go back and reshoot this scene, and my do so some time in the future, but even as it is, I still enjoy it, and it has been a great learning piece for me in many ways

Thank you very much Yvonne It's not my usual style to edit so much, but it was a fun experiment for me. If I had left this one to my usual style I wouldn't have posted it since seems so similar to 'Everglades Storm', imo...

I agree with Nyssi. Perhaps if you were able to step out in front of the large clump, this would've been more effective. Otherwise, the color range between sky and clouds are magnificent.

Thank you very much Sterling I had originally wanted my main subject in this shot to be the tall grass, but after seeing how beautifully the clouds turned out, I wish I had been 15ft over... I couldn't move in front of the grass since it was all swampy (everglades) and their were gators about, so I didn't want to take a chance of my kids seeing mommy get eatten by a gator

I had taken a number of other photos from the area, but of course this would be the one the sky looks the best in! I will definitely be going back to this area next spring/summer to try again for a better shot

NyssaDuck [2004-12-03 14:57:25 +0000 UTC]

Wow Wonderful shot, Shannon. I'm loving the sky. It's so dark and nice lookin'. The blue-grey colour of it is very tasty I love how clear it is, and there's such a great variety of colour there too, which is fabulous. I like the grass, but I think the shot would have worked a bit better without the big clump of it in the center of the image. It distracts away from the sky a bit, which is definately the most stressed point of the shot. But I still love it. Well done.

vividlilac In reply to NyssaDuck [2004-12-03 16:31:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much Nyssa! My original intentions with this shot was to focus on the grass, but after looking at the shot after I captured it I really wish I had moved about 15ft to my left or right to get around it, but hindsite is always 20/20! We had made this a family trip to try to see some alligators since it was supposed to be mating season when I took this, so I didn't want to do too much wandering around in the grass and accidently get eatten!

I will definitely be going back to this area next spring/summer to try again for a better shot..
