Yes, I see him in many different ways, too. My hand draws quite the same, though, but my mind has a different mental image of him. Thanks! Happy New Year!

I wonder if somewhere in Sev's ancestry there's a Gallic druid called Panoramix... because then I know what kind of potion that is, and I advise everybody to run. (That is everybody that grew up reading AstΓ©rix, because otherwise they have no chance of getting the allusion, in which case I apologize, but I gather you're French, so I hope you'll get it. )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Vizen In reply to ScoutF [2011-12-28 15:23:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes I'm French. And I first thought of Panoramix, when imagining Albus at the first reading - before seeing Merlin - and then just Albus.

You're right! That's what mistletoe is for anyway, every true potion maker knows that! *Pottermore veteran speaking*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScoutF In reply to Vizen [2011-12-29 12:01:06 +0000 UTC]

I am secretly convinced that Panoramix, Merlin, Dumbledore and Gandalf are all the same person. XD
My default Albus is someone who looks a lot like Panoramix wearing purple, with a few features of Ian McKellen and Richard Harris.

Pottermore veteran. Oh you lucky creature.

Vizen In reply to noleme [2011-12-28 15:24:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh really, I've always thought it was half- non understandable in other countries, because of the numerous cultural hints!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

noleme In reply to Vizen [2011-12-28 22:54:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah, so maybe the version I read was modified and some things omitted to be understandable to the target audience; then there probably were things I didn't catch, and things that were implied but kind of lost when you don't know the language/culture (I recall some fun with accents from various regions in one of the books, but when you read about some guys lisping, you don't really know if it's a real thing or if the translator just invented it to show a funny accent ) ... If a character was meant to look like a particular person, there's IMo no chance of putting that across, so that would be another hint lost on me; I sheepishly admit I mostly liked the illustrations and the stories themselves, and the portrayal of other cultures.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vizen In reply to noleme [2011-12-28 23:14:14 +0000 UTC]

It's notably a great comics for kids and adults: children can understand the humor and older, adults can catch the hints. For this reason it is possible to read it even without being French but yes, there are cultural references (some characters looks like famous people for instance ) but indeed you can enjoy the reading even without noticing the said references. I know I understood the full nuances only once being older and I read and enjoyed the books when I was a child, when some jokes were not fully understandable for me because I didn't know enough the national culture. (Not that foreigners are children, of course - just that children don't know everything about national history or politics etc!).

I loved that in these books there is a good spirit in general. It's good mood, no true bashing, no true war.

Er, the only one I recognized was Brigitte Bardot... I think. Hopefully.

Well said, and same here! Also, it's that the general war/occupation setting is so far in history that it's possible for me enjoy; I doubt I could enjoy such a series if the temporal setting was let's say WW II, if that makes any sense. That's just too near for me to be funny.

Vizen In reply to noleme [2011-12-28 23:34:15 +0000 UTC]

Sure. And the Romans are nice, we cannot see them like true enemies. Also, they don't present the Gauls like truly superior. Well, I didn't feel like they were better than the other people.

Looks more like holly than mistletoe. Mistletoe has small round leaves and white berries; holly has medium-sized, spiky leaves and red berries. It's amazing how often internet sources mix them up.

On the other hand, it's Sev and he's gorgeous, so who cares except fanatical potions masters?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vizen In reply to janach [2011-12-28 09:34:04 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea, honest...Yes, for me it has red berries, I think. Ahaha, I would just so fail the potion... I'll see what I can do. I'm lame at drawing some things, unfortunately.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

janach In reply to Vizen [2011-12-28 10:00:42 +0000 UTC]

I never in my life heard of holly and mistletoe being mixed up except recently on the internet, and now I see it all over. They're not even related to each other.

Oh well, it seems to have become a common error, if a strange one. Maybe you can fool Snape into thinking you're a Gryffindor when he deducts points for your failed potion.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vizen In reply to janach [2011-12-28 10:09:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh but the red there is the ribbon, not the berries, anyway. Without the red ribbon, it was hard to show that it was decorative and not common weed. But for sure, mistletoe is like wrapped gifts: I find it hard to draw properly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

janach In reply to Vizen [2011-12-28 22:10:05 +0000 UTC]

I didn't realize it was a ribbon. It's a good idea, though.

Mistletoe should be easier to draw than holly, since it's branchier and has smaller, lighter-green leaves, so the leaves don't mush together in a green blob.

I love the idea of our grinchy Sev putting either one in a potion, complete with cheery red ribbon.

(and here I just pray English didn't fail me, because a misuse of the language won't do it in such case)
