Description I don't think he is very pleased.

Ā I prefer the line art : vizen.deviantart.com/art/Wip-Pā€¦

This precise instant fascinates me. At some point, I decided I should draw these scenes, when the character displays his stricking courage, as it is what amazes me in him, above all his numerous other qualities and charming personality. The scenes in which he comes to Dumbledore in DH or comes back to Voldemort in GoF or even to Hogwarts in the start of the 7th Year show his bravery as well, as others do (it would be a great subject for a Challenge, really : "the Bravest Man" : Snape facing a shampoo, and so forth). However, this precise moment is, in fine, probably my favourite one.

I am mesmerized by the color variations in his robes..the blues and purples. This art is evocative in pose of Mary takes Jesus down from the cross pictures.

Well, I'm not sure the colors are really realistic (a black robe can't have so many colors) but I had fun playing with them.

You have always been, and always will be, the ultimate master of expression in a character's eyes. So intense, firm and resolute and still you can see the twisting of the soul inside.

Oh, thank you so much. I have to say it's what matters to me first - the expression- above all what is to draw in a drawing. I never tried other eyes. Maybe only Severus's eyes are really inspiring.

They are certainly depicted as the most vivid eyes of the entire HP universe. Not a single other character has so many epithets attributed to their eyes like Sev has. But drawing eyes in general is funny and entertaining, at least for me- it's just amazing how drawing two different sets of eyes can drastically change the character's entire disposition. Try it, you might like what you get!

"... there stood Snape, his wand clutched in his hand as his black eyes swept the scene, from Dumbledore slumped against the wall, to the four Death Eaters, including the enraged werewolf, and Malfoy." It's an incredible moment, a beat in the action, as he clocks in an instant that this moment has come.

You've captured it so well, this is painfully moving.

It's such a strange idea, having to find reserves of mercy in hatred. I also found Dumbledore's pleading affecting, even though it seemed almost insulting - as if Snape would ever really have backed out. He - AD - was so vulnerable. (Lately I've begun to speculate whether they had an agreement that Dumbledore would communicate with McGonagall about the situation, and it never happend; a deliberate sin of omission on the old man's part, or simply time getting away from him ... and knowledge of the consequences had to be absorbed and accepted in these same three seconds.)

Minerva would have messed up and ruined everything with her strong principles and good heart. Much too dangerous.

janach In reply to Vizen [2011-08-20 23:19:34 +0000 UTC]

It's not Minerva's strong principles and good heart that would mess things up had she been in on the plot, but her lack of subtlety and her insistence on wearing her heart on her sleeve. By keeping her in ignorance, Dumbledore made sure these characteristics worked in Snape's favor instead of against him. Her simplistic and sincere hatred reinforced his cover beautifully.

Agreed, I couldn't see Dumbledore following through on that one, but I can see him offering to (or some similar gesture), as insurance against total isolation. He is infuriating. Mainly this is just looking for an explanation of that poignant plea - it's hard to think Dumbldore would have doubted Snape's ability to read the situation or to summon 'the right attitude'. But who knows? That's why the scene is ... everything you said.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Vizen In reply to Preseli [2010-05-28 07:34:53 +0000 UTC]

Of course Albus trusted him with his death but Severus argued on it and had still been under the shock of Dumbledore's plans for him and Harry. He's been probably difficult about it and even if Albus knew he would do what he had to, the plea sounds like an encouragement, to help him...I thought also that Albus didn't think he would be under the Potion's effect, already dying, and he certainly thought he would be armed with his wand (for this story of Elder Wand's master), so that it would have looked like a fight between him and the Death Eater, what is more honorable... and here, what happened is different and placed Severus in a very disloyal position : he will just be a murderer of a defenseless and cornered old sick man, a coward who killed without fighting his victim. Maybe Albus felt it requires even more courage from the proud Severus, who always tried to show he was strong and valuable.

Severus should have felt such a sorrow, as his reactions when Albus's hand is cursed show that Albus means something to him - and he can't say his farewells. The comforting part is that he always knew that Albus would die this year and could be there for him. Albus seems to be more grateful and affectionate - in his way- to him in this 6th year...

The whole scene is striking, so simple and effective, complex and neat at the same time. I had a personal memory of reading it in French, and when I looked for the English version for the artist's comment here, I was again amazed by the even bigger effectiveness of the original language. It is visual and at the same time emotional. There is not this micro-second of hesitation, of silent suffering : just Albus pleading, what supposes, when you learn about the whole story, that Severus could have hesitated. The "Severus...please" is a masterpiece of Rowling, with so many feelings at stake in two single words. Of course, Severus has no choice. He is still amazingly brave, when he complies. Dumbledore is so infuriating, isn't he.

That's Rowling's strong side - she can tell a story that could fill books just within two short setences

"He has her eyes"
"my word severus that i shall never reveal the best of you"
"And my soul, Dumbledore, mine?"
"Severus...please"
"After all this time? - Always"

MissNight [2010-05-27 21:16:27 +0000 UTC]

This is confusing. I like it a lot but at the same time I don't. It has nothing to do with your work, you're talented and it's a great bit, but something about this puts me off and I can't put my finger on it! It's driving me mad. I agree with someone who had said that it gives off a "stained glass window" feeling but at the same time there's some "mess" and blur to it that turns me away from that feeling. Maybe that's what's confusing me.

I often wonder; had Snape murdered before? I think back to the "And my soul...?" convorsation between him and Dumbledore. I know he's watched people die. But I don't know if I know that's he's actually had to kill anyone before Dumbledore and it makes me think if that's part of the reason he has the "revulsion" etched into his face. Again, just random thoughts here.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Vizen In reply to MissNight [2010-05-27 22:51:08 +0000 UTC]

Technically...The mess and blur are usual with me, as I don't have the same method as many more organized digital painters : I just do, un-do and re-do my drawing until I'm tired of the picture and choose one of the better versions. It means that for example I changed the lips many times and that the expression was worse with a different brush...I change my brushes, for example sometimes using neat brushes and sometimes the aerosol brushes (well, but currently I have a problem with my stylet, it doesn't work properly). I'm rarely satisfied with the result, but I'm unable to draw neat pictures similar to photographies, because it's not in me. Most digital paintings are very neat and I guess the eyes can be disturbed by my style.

I don't know for Snape, but I personally don't see him as a past murderer. The hate and revulsion he will show in this scene can be for himself, for what he does, for what Albus wants him to do, maybe a moment of hatred for Albus himself for letting him in this situation, it can be many things altogether...The violence and ambiguity of the feelings displayed on his face is a really great point in JK's writing.

MissNight In reply to Vizen [2010-05-30 21:37:23 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean, the most simple of words that she wrote opens up so many thoughts and questions. lol It could be many reasons that his face shows hate and revulsion. Hell, it could have been an act and he knew Potter was there, he faked emotion. *shrugs* Who knows?! lol

arcanetrivia [2010-05-27 18:57:59 +0000 UTC]
