Alyssa texted Jake to go ahead and get sleep. She wanted him to be well rested in case Portland Meadows didn't call off their next day's program to inclement weather. Now 9 pm, the temperature was still 36 degrees Fahrenheit, but she knew it wouldn't stay that warm all night. The radar showed rain looming in the distance, about on the edge of a temperature differential. It rained and then became cold enough for the soil to freeze, Alyssa didn't want Iwar to touch the track. She hadn't had a single workout in freezing temperatures to acclimate her lungs, she had never had the thinner racing bandages applied to get used to, and Alyssa didn't want to risk an injury without them on the harder surface. A frozen track would decrease Iwar's chance of success and increase her chance of injury, and that was simply not a game Alyssa wanted to play.
With a sigh, she walked to her kitchen to warm a bowl of soup, twirling her hair of nervous habit. A woman's angry voice rang off of the TV from the poorly written soap opera, and a small watchbox hovered in the bottom right corner of the screen showing the impending storm. This was going to be a long night.

Ethan teased Alyssa's slow reactions when he met her at the backstretch. She had managed to get four hours of sleep once she knew that racing would be on the next day, but her anxiety about the race itself had emerged once the weather became a non issue. The race was only a maiden, and she herself found herself surprised about the anxiety. But this was a monumental race. This was the first horse that Ethereal Acres had purchased and trained since Ethan and Alyssa took over; the first horse that Alyssa herself had trained from the very beginning. Today was much bigger than she'd initially realized.
Iwar nickered from her stall, her breath momentarily hanging in the crisp winter air. It was unusual for Ethan and Jess to come to the backstretch and stay long, and having other members of the team around made for a larger gathering of familiar faces than she was used to since she had been shipped from Eugene. She vigorously explored Ethan's hand with her lips as he reached up to pat her.
"No, no treat right now. I'm not about to spoil your appetite in front of Alyssa right before your first race." Ethan laughed, finally reaching high enough to scratch behind an ear. "Though you'll get more than enough tonight, I promise."
"Okay, enough," Alyssa chided, waving her hands at Ethan. "Go get yourself a nice place to view from, Jess already made me promise to make you get seating. Go ahead and grab me a draft--I promise it won't get warm today--and we'll meet you when they're sent off for post parade."
As if on queue, though really just hoping for an extra scratch, Iwar gently headbutted Ethan who muttered as he dejectedly lumbered off.
