Description Page 24 of a comic strip I am working on that is set in ancient Rome and is about the early life of Gaius Julius Caesar.

This page makes reference to Sulla’s well-documented bisexuality. It also demonstrates his vanity through his use of the wig in old age (the wig is not actually historically documented; the idea comes from Colleen McCullough’s novel “Fortune’s Favourites”, though her arguments in favour of the hair piece are very convincing – for example if you look at a bust that is believed to be Sulla in later life, it certainly looks like he has a strand of straight hair protruding out near his ears from under the curly hair!)

Also, in reality, Roman statues were painted to resemble the person they represented, so the bust in panel 2 would actually be flesh coloured, with ginger hair and blue eyes, but I elected to keep it stone coloured because when I did colour it to look like Sulla it just looked a bit too real; like he had a severed head on a plinth!!

Just read the comic to it's present conclusion - hope more is coming on the way.

Thank you for taking the time to read it! Unfortunately it is on hold at the moment as I am working on a number of other projects (including a Roman one), but it might be nice to return to this comic one day (and perhaps redraw some of the artwork that I am unhappy with!).

Thanks again, though.

I love Sulla's silly, silly wig. It about made my night. And I'm glad someone pointed out the thing about Roman busts being painted though, honestly, I think I prefer them without .

I really love what you have of this comic! Do you have any plans to continue it at some point?

Hello!

Sorry it has taken so long for me to reply to your comments; I have been having issues with my PC.

I'm glad you like my Roman stuff; I do have plans to continue with this comic, but it is a matter of squeezing it around all the other projects I have on the go! Hopefully I will be able to get on with it soon...

I've just read the whole comic and I loved it)) Ah, so nice to feel the atmosphere of McCullough's books and HBO's Rome! And all the beloved characters I miss so much...
I really liked your Cornelia for some reason. And I-ll definetely wait for more pages.

Thanks! Really glad you like it!

Have had a hectic few months with a load of other projects on the go, so I haven't had chance to do any more to the comic yet - but I hope to get back to work on it very soon.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out.

Well done! Sulla was by far my favourite character in the McCullough novels.

And he really was desired very much... because Dalmatica, a married woman, fell in love with him and failed to hide this, Sulla got into trouble. He was running for some high position, and her husband got angry and send him away (in "the Grass Crown").

I love the way you drew the wig... the colour is orange - it should have been fiery red, as is said in the novel, but the wig makers could not make it in the right colours and Sulla really hated it - Pompey thought it looked ridiculous on him!

I love the subtle humor in this, from the wig to the little animal heads and nametags, and how he doesn't actually help the people who are dressing him. I assume that its all historical, though?

Yes, as far as possible, I've made it historically accurate. Obviously, there are certain things about that era that we can't know for certain, but on the whole, the late Roman Republic is incredibly documentented, so most of this comes from the ancient sources.

Thanks for taking the time to look!
