[link] handles anthros in a tasteful manner in comic strip style. It also tackles problems of race and segregation, even touches upon sexual-orientation at one point. The author blatantly states one character is a lesbian, but there's no sexy strutting about. Instead, he compares how the characters react to someone who's homosexual to how humans react to it in the real world. It's actually quite compelling and has long story archs, but manages to keep the mood light and entertaining. A good model to look to for a good 'furry' comic.

*nods* I read a couple of strips, and it is definitely very, very light. I'm afraid it is a bit too happy for what I'm going for though! It seems to deal pretty heavily with personal tales and appears to be pretty furry community oriented, and while Double Helix is all in good fun, it's definitely dark, more about general social commentary, and hopefully will appeal to a wider audience rather than a strictly furry one... I hope. This comic seems to do well what it was intended for, which seems to be a furry, weekly pun sort of thing, I think? I'll definitely check it out though and see if I can use it as a guide in handling awkward situations at all. Thanks for the suggestion ESDA!

Understood, and judging by your tweedy poodle the atmosphere will be dark indeed. However, it's still a good example of a furry comic tackling tough issues without having it be brushed off because it's reminiscent of Beatrix Potter.
That boy just demands fanart. I hope you'll post a model sheet of him with colors and personal pets. I've admired your artwork for a while and it would be fun to try out some anthro art on this fellow.

Definitely. I'm only a fraction of the way through it I think! Ah, I loved Beatrix Potter as a kid. Such stout and gentlemanly animals. The schipperkes were always especially well drawn!
I think he's a bit too far down the road issue wise for a solid model sheet, but he is fun to draw, so I wouldn't be surprised if a loose model or a more detailed drawing of him snuck in here. I warn you though, he is fun to draw, but character wise he is just a gross, self-entitled sicko. Let's just say that I'll be flipping through Killian's old criminal profiling books to properly cover him.

Hm, talking animal sex ... I dunno. If they're compatible species, like 2 dogs, you shouldn't have a problem. But cross species would have to be justified. However, considering the comic is called Double Helix and deals with ... uh, you know ... you could easily slip in a genetic lecture. Make the foxies love the foxies unless they can love the dholes ... -ies.
I like your band name.

Aye, hybrids are possible, but only between species that can hybridize today. No dolphin foxes flipping about. I suppose species are kind of like different races, but a bit more so since two different races can produce viable offspring, but crossed species usually can't. There are definitely prejudices against, say, ligers. I'd say a rabbit might marry a fox, but no babies. I'm sure that whole "exotic" fetish thing would exist too, considering it does with humans. With that though, it's easy enough to tiptoe around. If a liger kiddie is running around someone obviously had sex. XD I'm more worried about portraying the more intimate or disturbing sides of sex in an inoffensive way that actually moves the story forward rather than anything that acts as a lonely 16 year old kid's furry porn. I think it can be done..I think.

You could portray it as something similar to the ideal of unattainable beauty in human society. We have women dying to be thin or look more Greek or more tan or black hair. An anthro society might have the same thing where female anthros try to emulate say, a cat or rabbit, because they're thought of as the sexual ideal. This could lead into issues of body mutilation (to look more like another species) and comparing it to human practices of tummy tucks, foot binding, ear piercing, and other degrees of body mutilation for purely asthetic purposes.
This is both tasteful and realistic without turning into anthro-porn. You could touch on some extremely senstive issues this way. Back to the hippo analogy, imagine it trying to look more like a swan. It would be sort of pathetic, yet poignant.

Ever read Maus? Speigleman manages to hit very tough topics while avoiding the disadvantages you mentioned and using the advantages.

Hm, I think I replied to the wrong comment, so here it is again:
Argh no! But I should have. It's one of those things where people keep mentioning it and I think to myself "Oo, I should really read that"...and then I forget. I need to remember to pick up a copy for myself this time!
That or Devart is just screwing up the comment order.

I have to agree about Maus. It is a very very good read . Also, check out the Blacksad series [link] (an anthro graphic novel put out by a French Disney artists I believe). There's not as much social class involved there but it deals with sexuality occasionally and in a very good way that sticks with noir theme nicely.
