Description Let me first say thank you. Thank you for the thoughtful and kindhearted comments on my last post and definitely a huge thank you to and for keeping my chin above the water. You really did help me out, so thanks. A whole bunch of crud has been piling up lately and came to a head, but I think I've worked out some things. I'm actually in a fairly good mood today, so please don't be offended if I wait a few days to respond. I just don't really want to face depressing things again today and want to enjoy basking in some emotional sunshine.

So, I thought I'd use my not-depressed state to my advantage and be productive since I've been a horrid roof hopping-circle crying-soul menstruating recluse lately. Though being down gives you good band names. Like "soul menstruation". I can definitely see a female emo band called that.

Em, yes. This is a character sketch for a nasty little poodle who shows up in much later issue of Double Helix. I never can seem to plan these out in order, but hopefully I'll be able to connect everything in the end. He works at an animal shelter (which means birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians, um, I suppose insects and such too as only mammals have gotten off their lazy rumps and gone bipedal). He smells like snake pee, is a dingy yellowish grey due to cigarette smoke stains, tends to wear lame 70ish clothing, has chest floof and disturbing amounts of knuckle hair, and basically looks and acts very little like a poodle. In Double Helix, dogs came about from social breeding, so this guy has a huge ego problem since poodles were originally aristocratic (sure standards were originally bred for hunting, but hey, nobles like to hunt) where as he is a working dog who can't even get his fur pearly white. He's something of a scrawny runt as well. He honestly creeps me out, but I suppose that is a good thing since he is supposed to.

Since I'm picking this comic back up from High School, I had to decide what was best for it in terms of staying anthro, or switching to people. I think anthro will work best as:

-It allows me to play around with certain concepts which wouldn't work with humans, or at least, wouldn't function in the same way (like the "were-wolves")

-It deals with some disturbing stuff, and I for one can concentrate better on the message or theme when it deals with something other than humans. Anthros are one way to distance yourself while still being able to relate. Ie. A human being chopped up would only leave me thinking "sick" and have me closing the comic, while a talking giraffe being hacked to bits wouldn't bother me nearly as much and would still allow me to focus on the story.

-It allows you to deal with issues such as race and social classes in a way that wouldn't single out anyone or leave them feeling insulted. No one knows if a hippo is white, black, purple...so you can touch on topics of race and such in a general matter without having to talk about specific races or specific problems and tensions.

-I get bored drawing people over and over again. At least with animals you can mix it up a bit.

Problems with keeping it anthro include no one taking it seriously enough to read it. ...Or only reading it because they think wolves are, uh, sexy. Also, topics involving sexuality of any kind would be tricky to cover tastefully with talking animals. Thoughts?

[link] handles anthros in a tasteful manner in comic strip style. It also tackles problems of race and segregation, even touches upon sexual-orientation at one point. The author blatantly states one character is a lesbian, but there's no sexy strutting about. Instead, he compares how the characters react to someone who's homosexual to how humans react to it in the real world. It's actually quite compelling and has long story archs, but manages to keep the mood light and entertaining. A good model to look to for a good 'furry' comic.

*nods* I read a couple of strips, and it is definitely very, very light. I'm afraid it is a bit too happy for what I'm going for though! It seems to deal pretty heavily with personal tales and appears to be pretty furry community oriented, and while Double Helix is all in good fun, it's definitely dark, more about general social commentary, and hopefully will appeal to a wider audience rather than a strictly furry one... I hope. This comic seems to do well what it was intended for, which seems to be a furry, weekly pun sort of thing, I think? I'll definitely check it out though and see if I can use it as a guide in handling awkward situations at all. Thanks for the suggestion ESDA!

FablePaint In reply to wadifahtook [2007-01-06 01:14:29 +0000 UTC]

Understood, and judging by your tweedy poodle the atmosphere will be dark indeed. However, it's still a good example of a furry comic tackling tough issues without having it be brushed off because it's reminiscent of Beatrix Potter.
That boy just demands fanart. I hope you'll post a model sheet of him with colors and personal pets. I've admired your artwork for a while and it would be fun to try out some anthro art on this fellow.

wadifahtook In reply to FablePaint [2007-01-06 11:24:54 +0000 UTC]

Definitely. I'm only a fraction of the way through it I think! Ah, I loved Beatrix Potter as a kid. Such stout and gentlemanly animals. The schipperkes were always especially well drawn!

I think he's a bit too far down the road issue wise for a solid model sheet, but he is fun to draw, so I wouldn't be surprised if a loose model or a more detailed drawing of him snuck in here. I warn you though, he is fun to draw, but character wise he is just a gross, self-entitled sicko. Let's just say that I'll be flipping through Killian's old criminal profiling books to properly cover him.

Hm, talking animal sex ... I dunno. If they're compatible species, like 2 dogs, you shouldn't have a problem. But cross species would have to be justified. However, considering the comic is called Double Helix and deals with ... uh, you know ... you could easily slip in a genetic lecture. Make the foxies love the foxies unless they can love the dholes ... -ies.
I like your band name.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wadifahtook In reply to Droemar [2007-01-05 22:45:00 +0000 UTC]

Aye, hybrids are possible, but only between species that can hybridize today. No dolphin foxes flipping about. I suppose species are kind of like different races, but a bit more so since two different races can produce viable offspring, but crossed species usually can't. There are definitely prejudices against, say, ligers. I'd say a rabbit might marry a fox, but no babies. I'm sure that whole "exotic" fetish thing would exist too, considering it does with humans. With that though, it's easy enough to tiptoe around. If a liger kiddie is running around someone obviously had sex. XD I'm more worried about portraying the more intimate or disturbing sides of sex in an inoffensive way that actually moves the story forward rather than anything that acts as a lonely 16 year old kid's furry porn. I think it can be done..I think.

FablePaint In reply to wadifahtook [2007-01-06 01:25:38 +0000 UTC]

You could portray it as something similar to the ideal of unattainable beauty in human society. We have women dying to be thin or look more Greek or more tan or black hair. An anthro society might have the same thing where female anthros try to emulate say, a cat or rabbit, because they're thought of as the sexual ideal. This could lead into issues of body mutilation (to look more like another species) and comparing it to human practices of tummy tucks, foot binding, ear piercing, and other degrees of body mutilation for purely asthetic purposes.
This is both tasteful and realistic without turning into anthro-porn. You could touch on some extremely senstive issues this way. Back to the hippo analogy, imagine it trying to look more like a swan. It would be sort of pathetic, yet poignant.

Eek, that is so funny of you to bring up! When I was reading the comic you pointed out, I started thinking about the hedgehog living in a mixed species family, and how she was hitting the age when personal looks and identity become a central issue for most. Would see want to look more like a hedgehog, a wolf, or a bunny? Something else maybe? Was their cultural species envy? A norm to strive for? Is their a subculture of basically species-"transvestites"? That's most excellent that you brought the same sort of points up, and makes me think that I'm not crazy for thinking that. Body modification, beauty, and subgroups are all covered extensively in anthropological texts, so there's a good backbone to guide off of. The swan hippo mental picture is painfully stark.

awesoem drawin'

as for sexuality issues.. IMO? treat it like you ould treat it if it were done with humans. You are drawing them as people, not beasts. Just do it tastefully and all will be happy, hopedfully.

Hm, sounds like good advice. The more I think about it, the more I think I can just hint at whatever it is that needs to be said or, er, done.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shinigaminoryuu In reply to wadifahtook [2007-01-08 05:07:37 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like a pretty good way of doin' it. Just don't falter too much because they happen to have a coat of fur. I'd argue that they'd possibly be less 'shy' about things then we are... but the target audience makes alot of difference in that sort of stuff... and some things bother some people and disturb others.. So.. subtley is the best bet, in my not so humble and overly verbose opinion

anyway, I ramble.

oh yeah. I love your art <3 I don't comment much, but I adore it!

I have to agree about Maus. It is a very very good read . Also, check out the Blacksad series [link] (an anthro graphic novel put out by a French Disney artists I believe). There's not as much social class involved there but it deals with sexuality occasionally and in a very good way that sticks with noir theme nicely.

Woah. That is some serious talent, and it kind of freaks me out that the black cat looks like Batman in some angels. I simply must try to find a copy. The character designs and colors are extremely impressive, though much better than I'll be able to do in this comic. I love all the details in the background, and all the darkly humorous things going on as he walks by and shakes his head. Thanks for sharing!
