Description This image is dedicated to Nora, and forms part of the β€œBetween Friends Gallery”. The gallery celebrates the relationship between Canada and the United States. Nora's family is a significant piece of that history.

The car is located on Nora's farm in North Dakota. Her father, a Norwegian immigrant moved from the US to Canada in 1903 where he made significant contributions. They returned to the US in 1909, soon after which Nora was born in 1912. Nora lived in a family of 11 children. She was confirmed in Deer Creek Canada (which, as a carpenter, her father helped to build). Her Uncle and Grandmother are buried in Canada in the Norwegian Cemetery across the road from land her grandfather farmed.

Nora attended school in a building that was initially located close to the border, but later was moved a mile south of the line. The church was also located in the same area as the school. It too was moved at about the same time. She remembers that children attended school from both sides of the border and she had friends in Canada that she visited regularly.

She remembers that while life was hard, it was in some ways better because they had time to go and visit people. "Relationships were a priority to the people in those days" she says. "We did not have any means of transportation, and roads were scarce, so we walked when we went places." She comments that "time was not as fast as it is now".

The international line was not as definitive as it is today. In her youth, while the line was recognized as being in place, there was no real thought given to it in terms of security, and certainly no port of entry was used. When they wanted to visit friends and family, they simply walked across.

So let me ask you, since I have not been up that way. The boarder in these areas - are fenced? That is one big long fence if it is. Nora has family on both sides now, correct? What used to be a simple walk - now takes how long?
Been looking at the old cars and trucks - what a beautiful set of photos. Makes me just want to take one of the cars and fix er up. Of course, not likely to happen - but the desire becomes noticed as I look at the various cars and trucks. Would love to at least have the bodies on new frames. Oh to dare to dream...

the border is mostly unfenced, except for a single strand of barbed wire to mark its presence, though it is actively patrolled by remote drones from both sides. The only roads across lead to border crossings, and usually the closest road is a mile away.

I am not sure if Nora is alive any longer. Yes she does have family here in Canada, and it would probably take her about 30 minutes to get to the crossing at Walhalla to come around.

What a neat old find...both Nora and the car I've always gotten on better with older people than my own generation and I like to see how things were through thier eyes. Times were different then; people were a little more relaxed abut where the dividing lines were in just about any case whether it be personal property or countries.
Just 30 years ago I used to be able to wander unchecked all over the countryside where I lived. Property owners didn't mind if I walked across thier property to get to a prime fishing spot especially if I took them some fish on the way back Now you're risking trespassing charges just going up to thier doors to ask permission to fish. The world ain't sane anymore.

Great job on capturing this old Chev (at least this one can be identified )

thanks John,

Your comments on property were very interesting to me. I certainly notice a great difference between Canada and the US in this area. When in the US I tend to be much more careful than I am here at home. I kind of wonder what caused the difference?

Corvidae65 In reply to WayneBenedet [2008-07-12 04:46:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, Wayne, in the U.S. the change can be summed up in one word: Litigation. Land owners are afraid of being sued by people who get hurt while on thier land whether they were there with permission or not. There have been too many cases where thieves have sued property owners after getting hurt on thier property. Sounds nuts, don't it? But it happens quite frequently.

WayneBenedet In reply to Corvidae65 [2008-07-12 05:20:22 +0000 UTC]

that explains a lot. That is where the US and Canada are different.

It's the "Land of Opportunity" down here ya know *roll my eyes* It's a little scary living in such a litigous society. It's one of the many reasons I retired from truck driving. A fender bender could cost me my house! No kidding.
