Description A few years ago I was in boot camp. I was doing drill in South Carolina summer  so HOT(x10) I was preparing for the first drill qualification a month in when I had some REAL bad luck. The thing with rifles in any basic training is they are old and beat up from years of use. However the marine corps is especially bad. To put things in perspective I was given a m16 rifle a rifle so old my grandfather carried one during his time in the army. The rotation of these were not kind either theses were old beat up and had scratch marks all over them. One day I'm doing drill with the rest of my platoon. Our benevolent overlord the drill instructors were letting us use the parking lot since it was a lot more cooler during the time of day. We were half way through before evening chow when we got a black flag advisory (danger limit time outside for heat exposure). I was through drill the guy next to me was getting smoked for some reason I cant remember the guy down the way from him 100% had his hands in his pocket but for some reason no one noticed. The dude next to me was perfectly in sync. Then there was me... I was getting ready to do present arms when all of a sudden things got really un fun really fast. The take down pins in my rifle fell out completely. I was stuck holding to parts of my rifle. The upper receiver and barrel  were in my right hand the lower receiver and the rifle butt were in my left. In that moment I knew I screwed up the drill instructor looked at me. Shook his head and walked away (He didn't even attempt to say anything. I was able to find the take down pin that was missing and shove in back in. Just I I was caught by the knowledge DI. The dude with his hand in his pocket was caught. We got smoked for that as a platoon. We were running during a black flag advisory (90F) weather. Unsurprisingly by the time we got from the parking lot to the sandpit we lost two people as heat causalities. We spent the rest of the night after we went to chow getting destroyed. 10/10 would never want to experience again. After this incident I made sure to always push on my pins so they would stay in place. I never actually got to fire my rifle due to a injury and to be fair I was actually glad. After seeing what those rifles were like I defiantly did not want to fire one.
