Description Usually I use warmer palettes, so it was fun working with colors that I don't normally use all that often.

That's such an eye-catching painting. There's only few variation of the objects on the scene but with the details very nicely done on the main focus attraction which is the tree stump and the bird, the painting becomes very enjoyable to look at. There's not much variation on the colors either but the palette is unique, unusual in nice way. And of course the most attractive feature in this piece is the texture, the chalk-like appearance is so pleasant to look at.

I think you've done an amazing job with this painting, even already thought about the thin plant's shadow falling on the stump, those subtle details make the picture worth paying attention to. If there's something I'd suggest to improve that would be the contrast - I there's too much of brown color all over. Other than that this piece looks already perfect.~

Thank you for the helpful comment! I agree with you, I need to vary up the color temperature because it's all looking very warm right now!

Wow, the texture and clarity on this piece is amazing. The bark of the tree stump and the spiny leaves in both the foreground and back have a really defined nuances to them that make the environment feel natural and realistic, and the bird makes a nice focal point as well. Good job

Hi there!   I'm from

Let's start by saying I love the small details and the setting here. Color selection is lovely too. However, there are few things I'd like to suggest to improve this piece. But please feel free to ignore this comment if you think its not helpful.

I've done a quick paint-over to demonstrate the changes I've made to the piece. If you like it, please read on as I've explained the steps I've taken in detail.

First thing you'd notice is the position of the bird has change. The original piece lacks interest due to the composition and some other issues as well. Here I'm fixing the composition by using Rule of thirds composition technique. If you are not aware of this composition technique please refer to this helpful article. It is a very simple composition technique to learn.

Now that the position of the bird is changed next thing I immediately spotted was the color of the shadows and highlights. They are both warm in the original piece. This makes lots of element stand out and it confuses the viewer's eye. To fix this, you can either make the shadows cool and have warm highlights or vise versa. It brings a great depth to the scene. So here I've used a simple color balance and adjusted the shadows towards blue and highlights toward yellow. This brings out our hero to the foreground: The bird! Is that a kingfisher?

Next thing I've noticed is the scene is full of hard edges and very less soft edges. This brings out unwanted elements into the foreground and again, confuses the viewer. I've fixed this by blurring out the right and bottom side edges of the tree trunk along with the plants which are in the foreground. Also, blurred out the background a bit but do not do an even blur here. Take the depth of the scene into consideration when you are doing this process.

So the next step is to fix the background saturation. Due to warmer tones in both background and foreground it was bit confusing to set a solid point of interest in the scene. I felt like reddish hues in the scene was too overpowering for the yellows on the bird for it to stand out. I simply reduced the saturation of the background and increased it a bit in foreground elements. I've used a bit of color burn on the tree trunk and the plants to make them bit dark and saturated. By doing this step I've given a better depth to the scene.

Afterwards, I've decided to add more depth to the background as it was looking bit flat. I added in some layered fog to break the evenness in the background. By performing above steps now we have added great atmospheric perspective to the scene. To add the fog I used a soft brush with noise and shape dynamics were on.

Finally, I've added some highlights to our Hero and increased the saturation of the feathers. I've adjusted the overall brightness/contrast of the scene as well.

That's it! I hope this was helpful and you'll be able to improve it much further than me. But if this wasn't helpful, then I'm sorry but I tried

Hey there! Thank you so much for taking the time to critique! I see what you mean--I know about the rule of thirds but I completely disregarded it with the bird, I sort of rushed it--definitely need to go back and fix that. Good catch! I agree, I definitely need to push the values and temperatures throughout the foreground and background, because looking back at it now it does lack contrast. Thanks again for your input, it is appreciated!

Hi, I'm commenting for  .

Overall, this piece is good, but could use improvements.  I love the detail on the bark and grass, but I feel that the color is kind of, for a lack of a better word, dull.  Maybe you could lighten it up.  However, I love the cute little bird!  But I feel that it should be lightened up too.  The sky is pretty good, and very fitting with the rest.

Hope this helped !
