I've always enjoyed the history and the stories around the civil war. I was recently reading through different theories about what would have happened if Lee had won at Gettysburg or Stonewall wasn't shot or, in short, if the confederates had won such-and-such battle would they have won the war. There are hundreds of key points in the war where a single event could have changed everything. While I was reading about the long list of events that would unfold if Europe had gotten involved I thought "what if aliens had gotten involved". The civil war would be a way cooler time for aliens to invade than the peaceful 50's American suburbs.While this picture didn't turn out as epic as it should, I figured I should share it anyways. This watercolor on 11x17 bristol paper. I hope you can enjoy it despite the boring non-dramatic perspective.

To think that back then, these terrifying heat rays were thought of as swords of heat, Invisible death jumping from one person to another, creating nothing but fire & mangled corpses. This was back in 1898 though, the heat ray just acted like a modern laser. I don't think the martians would stand a chance if they attacked in the modern day & age

You think it would be terrifying if the Martians invaded today? Imagine them in the Civil War. Outgunned and very poor means of communication, the Tripods would be engaging some battles while skirmishes between the Union and Confederacy would still be happening all over North America. I truly wonder if the war would stop or if they Rebels and Federalists would just fight around the threat.

They'll probably propose a ceasefire, so that the USA and the Confederacy can team up to fight against the Martians.

well, premiting that Ilike the picture, I think that it would have been so much epic chenging the light, when you think abut a drammatic war aganist aliens the sky is something like red-purple

You're dead on the money. This is rather weak when I look back at it. I think at the time I was going for something light so it referenced the common illustrations in the civil war books I grew up reading. When I see it now, I just feel like I didn't push this image at all. Thanks for you comments.

I was actually thinking about alternative settings for WAR OF THE WORLDS not too long ago. I know the 1901 England setting of the novel is not an option for a big-budget movie thanks to Jeff Wayne clogging up the international rights (we lost out on a faithful adaptation by Kenneth Branagh and Peter Briggs due to that), but you could keep the time frame and just change the location. with little harm to the story. Setting the story in turn-of-the-century Texas, for example, could be a fun way to go, since it would be post-Civil War, post-Reconstruction, and you'd have all sorts of iconic landmarks like the Alamo to set the major battles at.
I think there are ways to get around the Wayne blockade and still keep the timeframe of the original book. It's a pity Hollywood hasn't tried that.

Wonderful piece of art. I also like the idea of transporting the story from the 1890 England to the 1860 America and the Martians being caught in the middle of a civil war battle.
