Description So, I finally stopped procrastinating and finished my own square for the EFNW Charity Quilt project I'm organizing.  More details here if you are interested:
Pony Quilt Project Everfree 2014!Update #3: I have enough people for the project, but I am still taking requests to join until the end of the night.  If you want to participate and haven't sent me a note yet, make sure you do it soon!
Update #2: I'm still taking requests until tomorrow night before I decide who is doing what, but we definitely won't need anyone to make two squares now!  In fact I am going to need to put a few people on the back-up list.  Remember that being on the back-up list absolutely does not mean I don't think you are awesome enough to participate, it just means that we have a ton of people!  Maybe if the people on the backup list want to we can make some extra squares and make matching pillow cases, or a second smaller wall-hanging quilt!  Though I lean towards pillow cases because they wouldn't need batting and quilting.  Let me know what you all think of that idea!
Update:  I know I gave people until Friday night so there is still time for responses, but I

Why did I choose to do Twilight and not best pony Rarity?  Well, So many other crafters wanted to do Rarity that I felt bad taking that square for myself and not giving someone else a chance.  Twilight is second best pony so she was fun too!  Why did I only show her head?  Well, my poll was almost evenly divided on the alicorn versus unicorn debate and there were some very passionate people on either side. I decided to avoid any potential alicorn versus unicorn drama and just do a portrait of her cute face.  Problem solved!  Why did I stay up until 3:30 AM finishing the square tonight when I could have easily finished tomorrow morning or afternoon?  I have no idea.  It's probably best not to question that.

Twilight's square is made with quilting cottons and machine appliqued with rayon embroidery thread.  The fabrics that make up her cutie mark also have a bit of sparkle and shine to them.  I couldn't make the Twilight SPARKLE square not sparkle, now could I?  I tend to prefer quilts that are made with printed fabrics rather than solids so the only solid fabrics are her face and teeth.  I tried to choose prints that also fit with the Twilight Sparkle theme.  The purple in her hair has tiny stars on it and I thought the swirls in the blue seemed very magical.  The pink stripe is just a sort of mottled color.  I couldn't find a super awesome print for that one.

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out.  I have enough fabric to make a second one and am considering at some point making another and making the rest of the mane six in this style and sew them into a small wall hanging for myself since I obviously won't be able to keep the quilt unless I can win it at the auction, of course.  However, I hope it goes for far more than I could afford to pay!

And you should be pleased with how it turned out! It's extremely charming. I think that you did only her face is pretty classy.

This is going to be one incredible quilt. I'm so excited to see it.

I am too!  I'm still waiting on a few squares.  I guess if I don't get these last couple soon I'll have to make a few more on my own.

I forget if I already commented on this, but if not - very nice! I love the gradient on the background; enough to be interesting, yet not so busy as to be intrusive.

Do I spy the same pattern in Twi's blue hair pieces as that in my grass pieces, albeit in a different colour? ;D

Ohhh I just love the fabric choices you made!! It totally speaks essence of twilight for sure! I cant wait to see how the whole quilt turns out!! I only wish I was good enough with a machine to make a quilt square for this too, such a wonderful idea   I just got a new brother se425 embroidery/sewing machine, so maybe if another one of these pops up in the future I can join too =^-^=

I just adore the fabrics you used for her cutie mark, it definitely puts the sparkle in twilight sparkle haha!! Absolutely brilliant

Thanks so much!  I originally had something a lot more complex in mind, but I really like how this one turned out so I'm glad I went with it.  Definitely practice!  Applique like this really isn't too hard.  Hopefully if the quilt does well there will be similar projects for future conventions, but maybe someone else can organize the next one

Oh I can imagine what a headache oraganizing this must be, but in the end I'm sure you'll agree it was surely totally worth it I used to get together with my grandmother and make smaller (more like infant-sized blankets/quilts) and donate them to the children's wards in our local hospitals for the kids to have a 'comfort' blanket. It's always nice to have something to cuddle with be it a blanket or a soft toy (hell I sleep with a blank test pony I made out of black and blue polar fleece, and I'm 23 hahaha!!)

I cant wait to see how that quilt comes out in the end I'm almost tempted to learn how to applique to make a smaller one for my todder lol

You should totally try making a small one!  As I mentioned, I'm definitely considering making a small one for myself with all the mane six.  I don't think I'd want to make all the squares for a bed sized quilt to keep, but a wall hanging I can probably handle!

Thankfully for me toddler beds are small hahaha!!! I figure this will be a good relaxing project (hopefully anyway, as I know how bad my machine can frustrate me haha) while we are building her new bedroom (hooray for unused unfinished rooms in a 100yr old house lol!) Be something totally cute for her to play teaparty on too.... hmm...the ideas .....

Haha yeah!  I thought that would be extra cute, plus it made me able to do the eyes without needing to worry about making an embroidery file or doing super tiny applique for it.  Win-win.

Very cute!  I love the design you chose.

Good Lord, 3:30 a.m.?!  But then, I shouldn't be so surprised.  If you've never made anything like a quilt square before (like me), you don't realize what a time-sink it's going to be until you actually start doing it.  And then once you start, you continually convince yourself that you're almost done even though you're far from it, and you end up working on it for far longer stretches than is probably healthy.  I started working on my square around 10 o'clock in the morning and finished her up around 8 that same evening.  Who needs breaks anyway?  That's what caffeine is for!

...I have no idea what it is I'm saying anymore.

I mean I often stay up late and I had slept really late because I was completely conked out on NyQuil the night before so I wasn't even really tired when I was done.  And yeah, everything always takes me longer to do than i originally estimate.

That's a good idea just doing a portrait lol! Looks awesome! I like how the background is a gradient
And don't worry, I stay up till the early hours sometimes too. You can't just go to bed when you're really motivated to finish right??

WhiteHeather In reply to dollphinwing [2013-12-27 20:22:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

I was really excited for that gradient fabric in the background when I found it.  I was like "OMG now it kind looks like the sky at twilight!" I get inordinately excited about fabrics sometimes.

Yeah I was on a roll.  I finally wasn't aching all over from being sick so I was like "I NEED TO FINISH!" It probably helped that I had a ridiculous amount of caffeine earlier in the day too

Haha, I definitely agree about printed cotton, even if it's just something subtle.

Yeah I really like the fabrics you chose on your square because of that!

I might have cone with a print for Twilight's face as well, but there was nothing the right color that was subtle enough for my taste when I was looking.
