Description
The Grey Cuckooshrike, Ceblepyris caesius, is not known by many people. It inhabits montane forests in Africa, from South Africa to Ethiopia and Nigeria. It dwells in the canopy most of the time, and trying to see it can be a literal pain in the neck! Most of the time it's given away by a thin, high whistle - 'Tseeeeee'... which clues you in to its presence. If you're lucky, you'll be able to glimpse it a bit lower down. Best case is if you are on a mountain slope and able to look out over the canopy. Cuckooshrikes eat mainly caterpillars and other insects. The family as a whole, the Campephagidae, consists of many species, many of them confined to small islands, especially around Indonesia and New Guinea. Acrylic painting.
