All right, I have to start putting new art up here! This is what I was drawing in a time of extreme stress, just before landing myself in hospital. It is a Ground Woodpecker, Geocolaptes olivaceus. These amazing woodpeckers are the most terrestrial members of the family! They actually should be called 'groundpeckers' or 'earthpeckers'. They are specialized for eating ants, scooping them up with their long tongues just like anteaters, aardvarks and pangolins! They live in virtually treeless regions, but usually in hilly and rocky places, where they clamber over rocks and excavate their nests in steep earth banks. They occur only in South Africa, and are Africa's largest woodpeckers - which is not saying much, they're dove-sized, but our other woodpeckers are even smaller.
