Description
The Marico Sunbird, Nectarinia (or Cinnyris) mariquensis, is a common sunbird species in northern South Africa. Here it is drinking the nectar of some Wild Dagga plants, Leonotis. Sunbirds are similar to the hummingbirds of the Americas, but are not as good at hovering, instead most of the time perching on the flower they're drinking from. Sunbirds occur in a great diversity in Africa, as well as Asia and Australia. While most of them drink lots of nectar, they also supplement their diets by catching spiders and insects. One group has become specialized to hunt spiders. Most species are brightly coloured, and overall delightful, often coming into gardens. Acrylic.
