Wow, that drawing looks so realistic. Did you do it for a guide on birds? I mean it looks as if it comes right from one of these books.

I love butcherbirds, they liveΒ all around my house and they sound so pretty.

They're like little magpies, which are amazing.

Excellent! I like the way you've used the vines to balance the composition!Β

Wow, your art is gorgeous. I assume you base your drawings on scientific study? I should do that myself. I've been trying to get into construction drawing myself but I just don't seem to get the hang of it. Gesture drawing and anatomy study seems to work better.

Thank you! In this case yes, I had the specimens available at the university lab so this is close enough for a scientific illustration. It has its flaws though. But I don't base my drawings on scientific studies alone unless that is the only material available (as it happens with dinosaurs for example, sometimes you have no choice). For this one I also did gesture drawings, doodles, rough sketches, etc. until I was sure of what to draw and how to do it, and then I did it. Scientific material is good at explaining things, but I find it a bit ''empty'' as a starting point for art. Understanding what you draw is important though, so it helps, but it never really explains things visually the same way you would when studying from life or a good photo and making your own roughs/gesturals/whatevers. What I mean is, don't think your art is lacking just because you don't study your subject scientifically. There is no ''should''. As for construction drawing... I don't reckon anyone feels they get the hang of it haha! It takes ages of trial and error and I wonder when will I start seeing less error and more of the good stuff. But one thing is certain: the more you practice, the better you get at it, so just take it like ''this is my time to just make dodgy drawings I won't care how they look like'' and do some.

Very beautiful. I love the detail and texture. The even composition of the branch and birds is very nice as well.Β

Β Very lovely! (well, except for the name and modus operandi that earned them the nickname 'Butcher Birds').
