I did get a lot of looks, but I think that as many people were looking at the black silk outfit I made to go with it as were looking at the brooch.

I recognize the Manx motif. It is a bit like the work my friend Pat Conlin used to do. It is a pitty he stopped, he was truely one of the best historical metalsmiths and designers around, not to mention the best martial artist that the SCA has ever seen.

Take care.

All the relief is engraving save for the bosses, which are domes soldered to wire that is riveted through to attach the findings on the back. I have never actually seen the backs of any of the extant Anglo Saxon disc brooches, either the engraved or the composit examples, but i know that there was some work on the reverse of some. I wore this brooch on my motorcycle jacket not long ago on a visit to York, where I litteraly bumped into a man who I later found out was the head of the York historical trust. He commented about the broock and how it reminded him of one he had examened in the museum, and asked me if I knew what was on the back of the museum piece. He never told me, and I had a grand time in York, staying with a woman at a cheap dive of a hostel, for as long as I could befor I had too go on to London.
Any way thanks. I'm glad you like the brooch; It is currently in Seattle at a gallery, and though I enjoy wearing it, selling it would be good too.
