Description I haven't done a painted feather in forever D: This seemed like a good way to practice...of course I decided to try my first double feather and it took much longer than I expected!

I also forgot how much a pain in the butt scanning/photographing painted feathers is. This is a scan, but I liked the colors of the photographs better...but the photographs don't get all the detail! So I had to choose one. Oh well.

This started off as a pair of plain old gryphons, but then I figured I'd jazz them up with some color. After all, if they live in the jungle, then why can't they be colorful like everything else?

Acrylic on two turkey feathers, approximately 15 inches long

This is also for sale, framed, in my Etsy shop: [link] Sold! But you can still click on the link to see some close-up details.

I remember when I used to do these... I still have a bag full of turkey feathers upstairs in the trunk... rotting away. I just don't have the patience for them anymore. When when I cheated and used puzzle glue to hold the fletching together. Anyone who still gives 'em a go, I commend.

The image is just as soft and beautiful as your watercolor pieces. Instant love!

How much would you have sold this for (without the frame)?

windfalcon In reply to runeowl [2010-06-09 19:25:55 +0000 UTC]

Without a frame it would have been $110. I still try to mat them regardless, since it gives it a nice presentation, and also protects the feather.

how do you do this??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to Rusylla [2010-06-01 03:15:21 +0000 UTC]

It's just acrylic on turkey feathers You spray the feather first with fixative (to keep the veins from coming apart easily), and then paint in thin layers.

Amazing work - I love how you've painted the feathers overlapping like that - it's almost like looking at a pair of feathers and seeing the gryphons as a mirage in the shine (if that makes any sense)
Beautiful colours and textures

Double feather? How do you get them to stick together?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to meihua [2010-05-24 22:21:48 +0000 UTC]

The best way is to find an archival, acid-free spray adhesive...which is very hard to do. I would recommend if you can't find an archival spray, to use a liquid archival adhesive, such as PVA or even Mod Podge. I haven't tried either of these yet, so I can't tell if they'll work well or not.

Oh this is so pretty! What do you use to keep the feathers stuck together?

The color shifts in their feathers really make this stand out. I wouldn't have jungle gryphs any other way So happy to see that turkey butt put to good use Now it's my turn to try feather painting, but it's so intimidating!

windfalcon In reply to AngelaSasser [2010-06-02 17:43:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually looking for the 'perfect' adhesive, one that is acid free and will keep them together strongly.

I wonder if resorting to something like fabric glue, like the stuff you use to prevent fraying, might be something to try on feathers? Time to experiment!
