Description As anyone who's been around my gallery for any length of time can tell you, I am in love with the Ocarina of Time. So, in honor of the 3DS release, (ignoring the fact that I don't have a 3DS) I am (maybe) going to draw a random OoT scene everyday up to its American release date, the 19th.

It's the final stretch ladies and gentlemen, and I tried some more of this painting lark. Not too bad, if I say so myself, though as usual, I should've started earlier in the day, though today my day was interrupted by Super 8, which is no bad thing.

Saria being my favorite character and all, it practically broke my heart to see the forest all full of monsters and Saria missing. So naturally this scene, learning the Minuet of Forest, stands out to me.

Might go back and adjust the colors, I just wanted to submit it before midnight. Poor Navi was the last thing I did, and I'm afraid she came out a little lopsided... so yeah I'll probably go back and fix her

EDIT: Finally fixed Navi, she's nice and round now. Did some minor touch-ups on Link too. Huzzah!

That made me so sad toooo! Ugh, it was just such a nasty surprise, running across the bridge and BAM being greeted with a giant deku baba.

I love the angle in this.... and that you included those little fairy chains! Omigosh, that is one of my happiest memories from the game.... just standing still until the fairies started to dance around me.... Just happy little moments.... Gads I love this game....

This is just gorgeous.

This is beautiful.....I love the lighting and all the little forest swirly light things. This was one of my favorite scenes.....so poignant, being there in Saria's favorite place and to see her missing......teared up a few times when I got to that point, and then for Sheik to appear was sort of a comfort, and a focus on what needed to be done so that the forest would be safe once again

Yeah, I love Saria. I think her becoming a sage is almost one of the most heartbreaking moments of the game - Link's just lost his closest friend

This picture is really pretty, incidentally! I love Sheik's words in this scene - basically reminding Link that he'll always have his memories of Saria. Aww <3

It's kind of fun! Especially since 3DS!Sheik looks more feminine and N64!Sheik looks more masculine - it's an interesting contrast.

Yeah, I did notice that in one of the trailers, both in figure and movement. I can dig it, but there was part of me saying, "Zelda, sweetheart, you're in disguise hiding from the most evil man in Hyrule... you've got to be more convincing than that!" In that respect I like the N64 version, because it makes the story point that she avoided capture for 7 years by pretending to be a Sheikah boy more credible in my eyes. Although... the first time I played it, I still thought Sheik was a girl until Ruto said, "him." XD It's only recently because of Smash Bros model comparisons and he 3DS rerelease that I've noticed N64 Sheik's masculine figure.

ryttu3k In reply to wings33 [2011-06-18 22:51:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... well, the N64 graphics weren't really wonderful, but the official art was pretty... unambiguously male! And since I read the manual before encountering Sheik, I always assumed he was male straight off. And honestly, for N64!Sheik, at least? I still do, considering his vastly different body structure to Zelda's, and their differing reactions and abilities. 3DS!Sheik could still have a seperate consciousness (as per the manga), but this time, the transformation was more androgynous.

A-anyway XD I could tl;dr all day on N64!Sheik's gender and identity, so I'll just link you to some tl;dr I prepared earlier [link]

"Final Fantasy still exists despite Kingdom Hearts." <--Nice touch.
My personal belief has always been that it was a magical transformation, transforming Zelda into a male body. And I agree, their body types are very obviously different. Shoulder pads and chest binding my foot. I played with the idea that the guy who originally sealed the well was the original Sheik, long since dead, and that through Sheikah magic Zelda had sort of borrowed his body and consciousness. Kind of like Animorphs I guess. I don't know if you're familiar with the series, but it's a bunch of humans who can transform into animals, during which time they have access to the animal's abilities and instincts, while still being able to assert their human consciousness to direct, suppress, or encourage those instincts.
I had never thought of your argument #3, but that makes a lot of sense. Although if that had been the case, (or even if it hadn't) I think it would have been really neat for them to include one last shot of Sheik during the credits.

ryttu3k In reply to wings33 [2011-06-19 00:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that works pretty well. There's no way it's just cross-dressing - they have totally different builds, Sheik's arms are further out from his spine than Zelda's... and the aforementioned dangers of chest-binding XD;; And I like that idea! (I have a plotbunny where the original Sheik was the man who could see the truth, actually - his bitterness and rage at being treated like a monster who can see the truth basically seperates to become Bongo Bongo, and as penance, he's forced to protect Zelda for seven years. And is redeemed that way. Anyway.)

And I used to LOVE Animorphs 8D That actually fits pretty well!

#3 was really what made me decide they were different characters in the first place! We saw the big reveal, I accepted it ("Oh, cool, Zelda's a ninja 8D"), then we got to the escape scene. And Zelda's reactions really made me go, "...Wait, Sheik didn't act like that at ALL." So that started the whole thing XD

And yeah, it would have been nice... maybe in the extended credits for the 3DS? They had to add in a couple of extra minutes for the Grezzo credits!

wings33 In reply to ryttu3k [2011-06-19 01:09:06 +0000 UTC]

(That's a pretty sweet plot bunny.)
See, I liked to rationalize her reaction to capture and the ring of fire as just being at a loss, because she suddenly found herself stripped of the Sheik persona she'd been living with for seven years, as well as his more capable body, and thrust into a dire situation right off the bat. Except for this: not only does she have to gasp every time Link gets hit, she has to stop running because... it's just so horrible(??). I can't even reconcile that to Zelda's character as Zelda, let alone Zelda as Sheik, and prefer to think that specific thing was just to give the player a hard time. I mean really. Who stops running from a burning collapsing building because the guy in front of you got hit with a burning rock but is himself still running? Surely not the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom.

Ooh, I hope the extended credits do merit extended footage, no matter what it is XD

Yeah, that's possible... I always just thought that she's not very composed when faced with danger? XD Slightly panicky, or something. Which is no criticism, it's just... a different reaction to Sheik's.

Yeah! 8D I love the Ocarina credits, no matter how fridge logic angsty they are, and I'd love to see more
