Description The cross fox pelt I got for Christmas
I nicknamed him Rocky because when I saw him I got a cool idea for a rock base/habitat. XD

That is a pretty cross. Getting one of those guys is definitely close to the top of my priority list.
Together with getting a silver. And a wolf. And a coyote. And a lynx. I really need more money.

Yeah, I don't trust my mom with buying furs (what happens when we end up with a rotting squirrel under the tree, hmm?) so I just asked for chemicals.
dangerous ones.

and yes. yes they are.

Yeah! He's a pretty good example of one for sure!

That's how I was with my Tanuki that I had gotten before. I think you're so lucky that your family will get you pelts for Christmas, all mine are too grossed out x3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfiedude101 In reply to Wellgarth [2010-12-25 17:03:43 +0000 UTC]

oh, my mom's grossed out too. I had to sit and write out an ESSAY on the difference between tanned, salted, raw, green, and taxidermy quality. She managed to pick out one from Moscow Hide and Fur. Whenever she says "ew that's gross" I break out the "life is beautiful AND THIS IS A SECOND CHANCE AT BEAUTY" speech and I can usually change her mind. for a bit, at least.

Despite everything she's fascinated with my wolf pelt and loves the two squirrels I completed. But whenever she touched them she freaks out. XD

LOL

Wolf pelts are the best, mine is my most prized thing

What kind of wolf do you have, I am curious - mine is an Arctic

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfiedude101 In reply to Wellgarth [2010-12-25 17:06:28 +0000 UTC]

Mine's a classic Timber. I have pics of him here, I think the deviation is called "Nanuk the wolf". I couldn't have him shipped here, I had to drive 13 hours up to Oregon after saving my money for months to get him. Very "genetic" coloring but good god, he's soft. and warm. Do you have pictures of your wolf?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wellgarth In reply to Wolfiedude101 [2010-12-25 17:11:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh, he's gorgeous!

I was able to get mine shipped; I shop from a place called glacierwear, and they do a fantastic job and the shipping is incredible.

I'm sad to say I don't have pictures of "Chaz" as I call him (I feel better that I'm not the only one who names them, ); He's gorgeous white and black though, with all his paws claws and everything else. Best part is he's pulled out, and not split. I sleep with the durn thing, especially in the winter <.<

Oddly though, one of the softest animals I've ever felt was an opossum o.0

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfiedude101 In reply to Wellgarth [2010-12-25 17:15:51 +0000 UTC]

Glacierwear isn't to great for taxidermy-qualities. they can be pretty "eh".

I sleep with mine next to me on occasion, too. It seems like the fur just locks in warmth. Do you mean he's cased skinned [split at the booty]? x3 Mine is too. I think the softest animal I've ever felt actually is the cross fox.

If you haven't, you should check out the group "Fur Pelts" where this is currently features and "Critter Collectors" - you'd be surprised how many people give little names to their pelts.

Wellgarth In reply to Wolfiedude101 [2010-12-25 17:18:38 +0000 UTC]

I'll check that out

With GW it really depends; I've gotten some pretty nice furs from them, especially that wolf.

I have no idea what the technical terms mean, I just collect the animals x3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolfiedude101 In reply to Wellgarth [2010-12-25 17:21:00 +0000 UTC]

If you don't taxidermy them, I wouldn't worry too much about "taxidermy quality" then. x3 that just means the lips and stuff are in good shape, but they tend to cost extra.

I "stuff" my animals so I have to pay careful attention to the condition they're in... they tend to be a lot more expensive. I think everyone in the house is okay with them after they're stuffed and don't look so... well, dead. xD

It's cool that you collect animals, though. What do you have so far?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wellgarth In reply to Wolfiedude101 [2010-12-25 17:26:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I would LOVE to taxidermy them, but the money is just not there ._.

I do enjoy just the pelts though.

I have:

Arctic Wolf
Beaver Pillow
Black Bear (which I use as a rug, though it's not a rug x3)
Ermine
Muskrat
Tanuki
Skunk
Opossum
Otter
Coyote Bomber hat

My next target was a red fox or a cinnamon fox - but there's so much I'd like to have x3

How about yourself?

Wolfiedude101 In reply to Wellgarth [2010-12-25 17:32:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh nice! I have a beaver face and it's super soft. I wanted a Tanuki but not bad enough to dig out of my wolf fund. At the moment I've got

Timber wolf
Black backed jackal
Doe cape
Cross fox
Raccoon
Lamb

I've got a stuffed coyote and 2 gray squirrels, too. All of those are waiting for taxidermy except for the jackal [he's just there. ha] and the lamb. I also collect skulls and feet... I've got a button buck, red fox, beaver and badger skull. I think it's a badger, anyway. I've got a musk ox, kit fox, coyote, red squirrel, raccoon, and piebald deer foot. They fascinate me.

If you don't want to invest in a taxidermy quality red fox there's a nice one here [link] and he's booty skinned [cased] too You can find tons of stuff with pictures here: [link] . The groups I'm in also might have links to some sites where you can purchase furs.

Neat! I'll be sure to check those sites out, thanks!

I only got the Tanuki because it was super on sale; Unfortunately being a native to China/Japan means he has to be skinned there, and I'm very wary of that. He turned out okay though, even if he's nothing but a hanger. Pretty pretty browns though, and the nub tails are adorable

I bet that doe cape is awesome; you've got some nice things!

I love wolves to death, but they sure are expensive o.0

So are wolverines, but man are they nice

Wolfiedude101 In reply to Wellgarth [2010-12-25 17:43:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it does make me wonder about the whole "skinning alive" thing, but I supposed we can't do much. All we can do is hope it died humanely.

The doe cape is beautiful. Unfortunately she's what is called "wet tanned" so she has the chill in the freezer until I'm ready to work on her in a week or two. Try explaining you need to put a dead animal in the freezer to your parents!

Wolverines are beautiful. If I ever have some scrap pelts you'll be the first person I talk to, haha. I had a kit fox a while back but it's in shreds now.

I can only imagine that! Thankfully my parents don't put up much of a fuss, they just refuse to buy them. That's why it's the only thing I put on christmas lists when they ask x3

Oh, please do! I'll always be interested

I like those skulls though; I had some python spines awhile ago but I gifted them as keychains. Wish I had some left!
