I was going to question how Discord could be defeated by mere Timberwolves until I found out he somehow has no magic. Part of the story, I presume?

Indeed. His magic has been drained away, possibly permanently, because a draconequus is only ever supposed to use their magic for good, not evil. Discord has broken that sacred rule. There is a way to get it back, however.
