Description Here's another collaboration with the guys at *CuttingRoom . Fun to work on.

Here's their description

----------------------

Anybody remember when there were educational channels? The Learning, Discovery, and History Channel--you could turn them on and feel like maybe you were going to learn, discover, or… um histor?... something. Even the Food Network or Animal Planet. Each of these channels had a brief period of nigh respectability. But in crap TV’s race to the bottom, these channels are big contenders. It’s damn hard to write parodies of their programming because their shows are already caricatures of themselves. Here are some actual promos:

• The Discovery Channel has a show called “Hogs Gone Wild,” which alludes to porn but is apparently “a new adrenaline-packed series taking viewers to the front lines in a war against an increasingly destructive and invasive enemy: the feral hog!”
• The Learning Channel has a show called Strange Sex. The latest episode is called “Well Hung.” Here’s the description: “The man that holds the Guinness Book of World Records' title of the world's largest penis explains the challenges of living so well endowed.”

I’ve come to expect this sort of sensationalistic “Who wants to screw my sister?” shit from Fox—who’s about a half-step away from pornographic snuff—half step past it, you understand. But somehow I expected more from these other channels. Maybe I’m just being naive.

I love man vs food but $5 Adam Richman will die before he turns 50.

I gotta be honest, I find the show Strange Sex to be quite interesting. But you're right, that particular episode sounds like it goes a little beyond the realm of what I wanted to learn about odd sex. But then, I've always been, erm, disturbed by the huge penises that seem to fascinate other women.

LOL... I was always of the impression that huge penises fascinated men far more than women.

Lol, I think you've got a...you know what, nevermind, I'm not going with THAT particular pun. But you're probably right.

does no one on here remember Tommy Tutone and their wonderful hit from 1982 or am I just one of the few in my years that actually can remember the 80s?

That being said, brilliant comic Ike. As you mentioned int he summary about the shows with 'porn names' I'm sure you've seen either Pawn Stars or Hardcore Pawn. can't get much further from those titles than those. In truth I find myself watching American Pickers and the aforementioned Pawn Stars, those are really cool shows if only cause I'm pretty into collecting weird things from America. Manily if i want to watch a history program I'll put on History International. My favorite show on there is Naked Archeology.

I think most of the DA members are too young to remember one-hit wonders from '82. Thanks for the complement -- although I can't take credit for the blurb... C from the Cutting Room wrote that. All I did was suggest a strip about the 3 Sheets show, drew the art and added the Hail Mary in the last panel.

you popped into my head this morning. A customer said that the number 867 5309 with ANY area code will activate the club card savings for any supermarket. I didn't believe him and he did our area code (215) and it worked. WHen i had my three breaks i bought food and used three different area code versions of the number and it worked all three ways.

The Learning Channel. Dear God. I DO remember when those were educational, PBS-style stations. Now, of course, TLC stands for The Lowest Common Denominator. Okay, well, I guess you need to add a 'D'. Anyway, this strip is a good snippet of the vile excess one can find on that side of the dial.

I thought this stuff was normal? Then you wake up to Jimmy Swaggart because that was the channel you were on the night before, right?

It counts for church too.

But as far as the writing goes, assuming you're correct, it should be hard to write parodies...except for the totally absurd, which this definitely is. I like how the third program links the other two up.

I don't spend time with them, and yeah - I thought The History Channel was for learning; like its brother the Military Channel. Mostly, I see that the Military Channel is appropriately suited...not like THIS!

Oh Bizarre Foods... well the way this one came down was I saw a commercial for Three Sheets and thought the concept of a show about getting plastered on every part of the globe was pretty hilarious, so I mentioned it to C from CuttingRoom. He did some research and found out that it's produced by the same folks that do Man vs. Food and so that's why those 2 shows specifically got paired together... but yeah, Bizarre Foods is in that same category.

haha, I can't help but wonder if that is a real phone number without the area code you used

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

woohooligan In reply to Astralseed [2011-04-23 05:16:20 +0000 UTC]

Actually that's an easter-egg... it's from an old pop song, a one-hit-wonder from the 80s when I was a kid. For a while it was popular to dial that number in any given area code and if someone answered to ask for Jenny. Which is kind of a lame joke, but that's what people did.

Well, the Science channels gonna be airing Firefly, the SyFy channel shows a bunch of horror movies and wrestling, the History channel shows nothing but aliens and monsters, and to to top it all off CARTOON network has live action shows...yeah... Don't even get me started with reality tv. Now THAT'S scraping the bottom of the bucket. How do I know this? Play dates and Gigilos.
