Description With the increasing popularity of Anime, Manga, and Movies like The Last Samurai, Japanese weapons are getting a lot more popular. Especially the swords. You see Katana's, Tanto's and Masumane popping up everywhere. The popularity makes them now a mass product, and everyone assumes you own one of those weapons because they are 'cool'. What I hate most about the hype are two things:

1) most of the weapons you see in the shops these days are poor quality. The balance is poor, the handles are to loosely attached, the edge has burrs and the wrapping comes of after a while.

2) you get a lot of people who think themselves experts on swords. Watching a movie, and owning a sword doesn’t make you an expert. On the contrary. It makes you dangerous. Too many accidents have happened because a grown up fool who thought he knew something went swinging with a sword.

I hope that I can do a little bit about nr. 2 with this tutorial. Too often do I hear people speak about swords and use the wrong names to indicate parts. I put in everything I know, in English, and in Japanese.

As someone commented, how does knowing this make you a better swordsman? Well, by knowing what you are talking about, you are making a first step in getting to know the weapon. Its essential that you know every part of a sword before you can perfect its use. Sure, it doesnt make you a master swordsman, but you have to take that first step.

Hope this helps.

Correction! It isnt Tusba, but Tsuba...

More info, thanks to centaur101:

Kissaki - sword point
Hassaki - Blade
Saya - Scabbard
Sageo - scabbard sash
Menuki - small ornament found wrapped in handle
Tsukamaki - handle wraping (usually japanese cotton)
mekugi-ana - bamboo pins holding handle to blade

I applaud your efforts. I too get frustrated with people that feel that from watching the latest samurai movie or from seeing an entire season of an anime that they have become an expert in wielding a sword. these people need to realize that a sword is like any other weapon, the second that you stop respecting it it can harm you greatly. Again, thank you for putting this information out there. Cheers.

Very neat - I've never seen a weapon disassembled so thoroughly before!

I'm more of a European weapons-fanatic myself; I would LOVE to see something of the scale you've done here featuring an English Renaissance-style broadsword

That drives me nuts. i saw something on youtube called mullet samurai that made my eyes bleed. even worse since i study niten-no-ryu kenjutsu. You know you hit rock bottom when people start trying to compare you to horrible films like killbill.

You should make a tutorial on how to assemble, disassemble a katana. I've been at my school for a over a year and my Kyoshi has still not taught us anything on the weapons make-up.

Thanks...I might add some of this terminology into my story... Most likely Habaki and Yokote due to the special lettering in the words. Good and solid pic.

Thank you very much for this information. I am currently writing a fanfiction in which a katana is used, so I'm studying it at the moment. (I like my fightscenes to be at least close to real ones) This helps me understand it better. Don't get me wrong. I have never even held a katana before.

Excellent and useful, you have a truly wise look on the subject. Also, the "Ha" can also be called "Hashi".

If you question my credibility, I am a nidan in Tennenrisshin Ryu Iaido, as well as a Shodan in Toyama Ryu Battojutsu.

Again, excellent piece of art.

I really like it! I've been looking all over for something like this. I know that it really doesn't need to be there, but there is another part of the sword that's missing. It's the "cutting edge", called the "monuchi" (I have no idea if that's spelled right. It is the top six to eight inches of the blade, and was always the sharpest part of it. It would be kind of hard to put it in a picture, though...

^ this is total truth.

I freely admit: I don't use my swords, I have them because they just look cool.

i wish i had a real, sharp katana.. with good quality. the only one i have is from spain,it's sharp, there's no real balance and the blade feels loosely from the hilt..but in my country (no,not spain) there aren't weapons for sale...at all.

Ah! A choice of an avid (sword) collector. It's a nice (sword) stranger.

Nerd joke aside- it's good to see someone who cares to teach people about how an actual fighting tool is constructed. Excellent work.

I was introduced to swords through the ugly mutant backscratchers in fantasy, but quickly got interested in the difference between bare-looking historical weapons and the really fancy fiction ones. My findings changed my art perspective forever.

I still often try to pack as much fancy into my sword drawings as I can while still allowing them to be feasibly practical. Katana are a little boring to me, so I gravitate toward a more Roman, Norman, or late Renaissance shape. What can you tell me to help me with that?

P.S. Look up John Clements- extremely knowledgeable on European swords!

Do you maybe know why the swords always make this clicking sound in animes? It sounds to me as if the hilt and blade aren't properly connected, or is it something else? It kinda irritates me.
Great reference, by the way! X)

Woran In reply to SnowCentaur [2009-08-25 08:52:44 +0000 UTC]

I dont know what sound you are referring too, but lots of movies add sound to make things interesting. Scabards for example are made of wood to protect the blade, but every single movie has a metal on metal sound when a blade is drawn.

I have to agree with the poor quality on Katanas in stores, my brother got a wooden one, and the handle was kinda loose, and then he dropped it once and now it's even worse.
