Thanks and pencil actually, then inked over with Micron Pens (probably a combination of sizes 005, 1.0 and 3.0) and cleaned up a few odd spots in Photoshop.

Well whaddaya know, I happened to buy a bunch of Micron pens last week, 'cuz my other 0.1 one ran out. O_O I guess they're the good ones.

Y'know, the inking of this picture still intrigues me. I've inked a few pics since I saw this, trying to use some of the techniques that I saw here (technique mooch?) and they still look different for some reason. I guess it's better that I've developed my own sort of look in the process, though.
Heh, this still makes me laugh. The perspective is a bit wonky, though. And where IS Dib's arm??

yeh The perspective in this is pretty disgusting to me :b I mean in itself the background's alright but it's on a completely different plane from the characters. One of those big mistakes that you somehow don't catch until you can longer go back and fix it, you know?
And Dib's arm? Wouldn't *you* like to know :> Unless you mean literally, in which case it's around Zim's right side, that's what Zim's holding (sudden realization that Dib's other arm is way short EW).
And which techniques are you speaking of? Maybe I can offer advice.
Technically, I wouldn't take this image completely at face value either, I mentioned before that this was cleaned in Photoshop. To be honest the undoctored lineart for this isn't so 'precise', 'pristine', and 'perfectly tapered at the ends'.
Thank you very much for mentioning the perspective by the way, you're one of the very few that's made an attempt at pointing out a fault in my stuff and I appreciate that. I usually just get stuff like "very nice" and "cute".

Yeah, Zim and Dib look sort of detatched from the background. Ohh, Zim's holding Dib's arm? I see it now... aww, that's so cute, although his expression would suggest otherwise... Actually, his arms do look about the same length, but they're both a bit too short. I have trouble with arm length too, actually.
Even though it WAS cleaned up in Photoshop, it was really just the look of the lines that I was thinking about. The way they're thicker at the corners and such... ah, I'll probably get the hang of it. Maybe I just needed another look at it. But I don't want it to look exactly like your style, though, for obvious-ish reasons.
Yeah, sometimes I'll see a picture that everybody swoons over, but I'm thinking, Yeh, it's really good but it could be better if you... It's better for the artist to get that kind of stuff. I also end up learning a lot from it, myself.

mm The thicker at the corners thing is handled differently depending on the inker I think, so really you're on the right track just trying to figure out what works for you. Ideally I believe it's done by applying/releasing pressure with your pen strokes lifting the pen from the paper as little as possible with each stroke, inking pen or brush with india ink or brush tip pen preferrably.
Since my skills with brushes/brush tips aren't all as great or controlled as I would like (combine that with not exactly owning a lot of said tools in order to practice), I tend to do mine by laying down basic outlines and then going back and adding thickness where desired with a smaller size tip. It's more time consuming and really more of a waste of your ink, I don't necessarily recommend it. I try to keep away from inking this way as much as possible even. I do recommend however getting a brush tip and practicing with that.

I don't think my hand is nearly as controlled or steady for that. I ended up doing what you did with the smaller nib. Maybe I should find a brush tip somewhere... Although I do like results that I got with my current technique, and it really didn't take too much longer than I already tended to, so I suppose it's not so bad for me.

That's true... I used to do writing calligraphy, actually (but I cheated with the marker pens). Trying it with the old-fashioned nibs was tough, though, especially trying to handle the ink flow and all.
I was inking a picture earlier today, trying to keep my hands steady... it worked better this time than before, but I still have to keep at it. And yeah, practice makes perfect...
