Description Male alpha arctic wolf Atila (Canis lupus arctos, vlk arkticky) from ZOO Brno, Czech republic, is protecting his baby cub the pups were so cute

As I am very proud of this shot, I dedicate the photo to my best friends *Allerlei and ~Kajula

____________

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Arctic Wolf (Canis lupus arctos)
Location: Canadian Arctic and the northern parts of Greenland
Size: 1.8 m long, 79 cm high weight: 75 kg
Diet: Caribou, musk oxen, Arctic Hares, seals, ptarmigan, lemmings. Arctic wolves eat all their prey, also its bones and fur
Conservation status: common. They still live in the whole of its original range, because local conditions are too extreme for humans.
Interesting facts: mother gives birth to some 2-3 pups in May. Pups are born almost black – as they get older, colour of their fur turns to white. Adults are completely white, even in summer | arctic wolves live in the pack of some 7-10 members. Only alpha male and alpha female mate | arctic wolves have shorter ears and nose than other wolves species. They also have thicker fur, shorter legs | they do not run too fast, their advantage is persistence | wolves probably do not see in colours.

well, no he used to care of them, when the cubs were very tiny. After they got a bit bigger and older, they started to stress and tyrannize him

I am afraid, that as soon as I took this shot, Atila rose and left XD yes, he cared for the cubs, but when they got older, he started to be really hysterical about them

Great shot^^ What a peaceful moment. I've always known that animals do have the ability to love. This shot proves it

Do you work in that Zoo? We have a Wolf Park around here, too and it is really hard to get nice shots if you are just a visitor

woxys In reply to CaveLupa [2009-10-21 22:56:49 +0000 UTC]

thank you and no, I am a regular visitor
But Czech ZOOs are usually very photographers-friendly and more over, those arctic wolves inhabit one of the best Czech exhibit at all! It is large, but still it allows you to have close contact with wolves, if they want to and they usually do want

If feel intrested, look at the exhibit - [link]

I had a look yesterday but after I visited your wolf gallery. And yes, the Zoo is really great. The photos you took are great^^ One can imagine what it is like in that Zoo But your photos of the wolves are still breathtaking. Even if one can get close to them I guess it's still not easy to get such great pictures
Where I live there are two Zoos and they still have mostly those horrible cages from grandgrandgrandgrandfather's times.I once had a work experience in one of those Zoos. They do what they could to make the best of it but that's everything but easy. One always needs loads of money and those Zoos are simply too small

woxys In reply to CaveLupa [2009-10-22 19:42:15 +0000 UTC]

again, thank you for very nice words!
I understand, what you mean my best friend visited ZOO Munchen recently and I was really very looking forward to her report, but she was so disappointed! Sha said, that she did not like the exhibits /too small/ and that there was no chance to take shots due to double barriers of bars

It shocked me

I was always surprised, that many people from rich countries (GB, USA, GER) ask me, if I work in the zoo, if I can take these shots.
Now I see, that it is because of our poor, but GREAT Czech ZOOs, which probably have better ecnlosures, than ZOOs in rich countries

CaveLupa In reply to woxys [2009-10-22 20:54:32 +0000 UTC]

That's right. In SaarbrΓΌcken, the biggest Zoo in our department (which is still quite small) there is also a very small bear cage that is not used anymore but it is the worst remain of all. There are some great Zoos in France quite close behind the border in Amneville and others that are said to have really great areas without barriers. But those Zoos are very big and new. Normally, Zoos have been founded somewhen in the 19th or early 20th century. In these times, nobody cared about an animal's life and nowadays we have to live with this horrible inherit.
But it's great if there are Zoos like these in Czech or France. That gives hope

There is so much advertisement around where I live (Saarland XD) and it's quite close to where I live but I've never been there in fact. Have you already heard of the Wolf park in Merzig? It is lead by Werner Freund who seems to be a wolf scientist or something XD There are all kinds of wolves living there and they do have nice areals but again large wire fences that make it more than hard to take a photo. And people are oh so afraid the wolves could escape and murder the whole population >.<

Even this very small pack in Sachsen spread panic around everywhere. People wouldn't want to wolves to return into our forests. They fear attacks to their children at night... And those stupid newspapers and TV series even strengthen that popular believe. After it was said that this yound female was found dead and nobody knew how many wolves had been living there the newspapers showed pictures of wolves showing their teeth together with their prey, saying 'The last thing this poor lamb saw'. It drives me insane

I do not know about this German facility, only about some special wolf park in France!

And omg, what kind of journalists do you have?
I am a journalist and this made me sick.
