Golden Orb Weaver
This was one of my pets. She lived outside my window. I would feed her horseflies. One day I went out to give her a horsefly I’d caught and I saw she’d caught a butterfly. It seemed rather macabre to me so I snapped a quick picture and left her to her meal.

Golden Orb Weavers have among the strongest silk of any spider, I heard somewhere that people are looking into using the web in making bulletproof vests (don’t know how true that is, but it sounds interesting). The majority of the time I see them the male is also in the web, in fact, that tiny spot that vaguely resembles a spider in the lower right corner is her mate. Their name comes from the fact that their webbing turns a golden colour with age. So no, the colouring in the web is not a trick of the camera.
