We were all expecting the avatar state to emerge in violence, as it had with Aang.

On the contrary: it emerged in peace. How beautifully appropriate, in a way.

Agree. It's highlighting that Korra and Aang are like totally opposite to each other.

Funny how this show and its predecessor make all the more sense when you start analysing them, eh? It's the mark of a truly good story.

Yes.
I had a funny episode with my friend about such analysis. She's much less obsessed with ATLA than me, but it once turned out that we both had been thinking of what could happen after ending of ATLA (that was before "The Promise" was released). And we both independently came to conclusion that... a civil war inside Fire Nation was quite possible (or a threat of one). To me, this shows how well set the story is. Though I'd prefer that more details of the last episode would've been shown - not just a short glimpse of coronation and a vacation.
