Description Hetalia © by Hidekaz Himaruya

Lili Marleen/Lily Marleen was a very popular, original german, song among german and (western) allied soldiers during the Second World War.
Due to it's slow and sad sounding melody and the text about leaving the loved one, it touched the hearts of all soldiers on each side (it's popularity went even so far, military command suggested to ban the song, guessing it lowered the soldiers' morale to fight).
It was written by Hans Leip and, most popular,  performed by Lale Andersen as well as Marlene Dietrich. Both sung it in German and English.

The first strophe of the german version and the second in english version
(actually, the lyrics of the second strp. in English are, more or less, similar to the first strp. in German):

Lilie Marleen:

Lily Marleen:

"Underneath the lantern by the barrack's gate,
there I met Marleen every night at eight.
That was the time in early spring when birds all sing,
then love was king, of my heart and Marleen's,
of my heart and Marleen's. (2x)"

I CAN ONLY SUGGEST LISTENING TO THE SONG !

(There is actually also a japanese version sung by seiyuu and songstress Tanaka Rie in the anime "Strike Witches" ^^ )

Different countries, but same worries. :'-(

On another, more light-hearted point, the American woman has such a short dress.
Not that I mind, but ... ;-P

My favorite version is the 1939 I think of Fem!Germany singing that version to Prussia, Bavaria, Hesse and the German troops in North Africa, I don't know why xD

I once worked on a fanart depicting Nyo!Germany as Marlene Dietrich, need to resume that one someday.

The best version I ever heard was Marlene Dietrich's which she sang in her caberet act.  When she returned to Germany in the 1960s her singing of "Lili Marleen" helped her recover her pre-war popularity with the Germans (many were angry that she opted to be on the Allied rather than Axis side).  The tune became popular with Allied soldiers when the British first heard it during the North African campaign, sung by captured members of Rommel's forces after El Alemain.

PrusAus, WWII Human AU. It's one of the kinda side stories of the Veraverse, an AU created by George Devalier with multiple pairings and each of the pairings have a fic centered around an old wartime song recorded by Vera Lynn that fits the couple. The main other pairings are GerIta, USUK, and Spamano. I'd recommend reading the others as well to make this story make more sense, especially the GerIta one, but it's not necessary. Sorry for the extremely long introduction to it, it's my favorite fanfiction series..
