Description A recent commission in leather - my customer wanted something based on one of my other masks, but with a wolf snout. After further discussions he decided that ears would be good too - and wanted to keep the horns. I am pleased with the way he turned out - he puts me very much in mind of Anubis.

Hmm, I love this mask, just out of interest, how much would one have to pay for something similar to this?

(saw this featured on a news article) -- VERY nice job, the snouts shape is really good, and I do like that the horns and ears work well against each other...

Thank you very much. I was uncertain about the horns and ears, so it was a relief when they worked better than I expected.

Your Welcome.... I wish I had the funds to do leather working (as I did it a long long time ago, and much enjoyed it) ... maybe one day when things settle out on my finances I'll take it up again.

Wishing you well.

Well, if my plans pan out then within 3 years I'll not have to worry about funds any more... as my wife should have a good job in the accounting field, and I'll hopefully be working in the videogaming industry as a scene modeler

From the look of your gallery you're definitely heading in the right direction. Good luck with it all, and maybe in three years time you can post some of your leatherwork.

OH, I will as I used to some really neat things with leather (when someone else was paying for the leather and I had a crapload of tools to work it with )

Oh wow I love it I didn't see this one before. I love the horns and how smooth the folds of the leather are. It looks almost like a bat face with its large ears and leathery skin. It's really good ^^

It's hard to believe that you managed to make this out of a single piece of leather. The snout is very cleverly done, and there's a hint of the Moddey Dhoo about him. Fabulous work, as ever!

xothique In reply to the-tenebrus [2008-01-28 02:07:44 +0000 UTC]

Moddey Dhoo... yes. Now that's a story I've not heard of in years.
I wonder if that's where they got the name for Scooby Doo?

~g~ it's funny you should say that. When I read about the Moddey Dhoo in Gunnerkrigg Court, I was really tempted to draw a crossover cartoon.

Fantastic! I love how the leather seems to fold and ripple over the forehead until you have the horn and ear-shapes. The subtle silver accents are fantastic, too!

Great looking mask.

It may be a trade secret but how do you do these masks? Is there any reference material (book, Web tutorial) that I can consult to learn.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xothique In reply to meleck [2007-10-30 22:44:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
There's no trade secret - the best advice I can give you is to do what I did - get hold of some leather and have a play around with it.
There is a brilliant book on mask-making, which deals with all media, including leather; "The Prop Builder's Mask-Making Handbook" by Thurston James. I am not sure if it is still in print, but it will guide you through practically everything you need to know.
Good luck!

Yeah, leather work masks are really challenging. I've seen my mum and her friends work, to me it seems so challenging.
