Guadeloupe is an archipelago located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles.
It is an overseas region of France consisting of a single overseas department.

Discovered by Christopher Colombus in 1493 in 1493 it was annexed by the French in 1674.
The British seized the islands but returned it to France thrice.

In 1946, Guadeloupe became an overseas department of France.
Today, the population is mainly of African or mixed descent and largerly Roman Catholic.

French and Creole are the predominant languages.
There are multiple and noisy independist movements, but the separatist sentiment is tempered by the realization that
the end of French subsidies would spell an economic disaster.
