Komi-Permyak Autonomous Okrug was first established in 1925 within Perm Oblast.
In October 2004 it was abolished and merged with PermOblast to form Perm Krai, where it is an okrug with special status.

Komi-Permyaks make-up 59% of it Komi-Permyak language is related to Komi-Zyrian and Udmurt.
It belongs to the Permian branch of Ugro-Finnic linguistic family.
After the merger, according to Komi-Permyak nationalists,
the funds for Komi-Permyak cultural activities and language instructionswere severly cut.
The language remains co-official in the new special status territory.
