Northumberland is the northern most ceremonial county and an unitary district in the North East of England.
Once part of the Roman Empire, it was a scene of many wars between England and Scotland.
It was an independent kingdom in the early Middle Ages, then it was under Scottish rule until Scotalnd relinquished all clams to it in the Treaty of York in 1237.
