Formerly called Uttaranchal, Uttarakhand is often referred as the Land of Gods due to many holy Hindu tempels.
The state was carved out of the Himalayan and adjoining north-western districts of Uttar Pradesh in November,
2000, becoming the 27the state of the Republic of India.
It borders Tibet on the north, Nepal on the east and the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh of the south,
Haryana to the west and Himachal Pradesh to the north-west..
Originally called Uttaranchal, it changed its name to Uttarakhand in 2007
