Description

Time to start my October project.  This year I thought I would reinvent some of the more classic monsters in a way as to fit into a new universe setting.  Quick note before we begin; I have no idea who originally made the wings, I found them with a Google search years ago and they seen to be pretty standard at this point.

Today we are going to look at a few Vampire species, see in the universe I am creating most monsters have a few different breeds.  Though thanks to the tireless efforts of the Department of Paranormal Affairs the general public believes these all to be pure fiction.

Camazotz - A breed of Vampire native to Mesoamerica, the Camazotz is a large nocturnal bat-like monster.  Unlike many Vampire the Camazotz is actually immune to sunlight, however they are nocturnal by nature so they still tend to avoid it.  No one knows for sure how long this species has been around, but given that they seem to be depicted in Mayan folklore it can be presumed they've been around a while.  Camazotz tend to form tribes and are not usually known to prey on humans.  Though an attack is not entirely unheard of (think of them like any other predator).  The process to become a Camazotz is much like other Vampire species, after a victim manages to survive being attacked they enter a state of near death hibernation for a period of roughly 12 hours while a violent transformation takes place.  Given their large size combined with their tendency to travel in groups and feed on livestock new Camazotz tend to be a rare thing.

Dhampir - A result of mad science gone to far.  Dhampir, or "Living Vampire" do not in fact occur in nature.  During the 18th century scientists were looking for a way to extend the human lifespan.  A scientist by the name of Edwin Leitch hypothesized that if one were to transfuse enough blood from a Vampyre (note the spelling) into their own system, they would inevitably take on their immortality.  As a result of his experiments Leitch was in fact able to prolong his own life, he was not a true immortal as he has shown signs of aging over the centuries.  Furthermore the process leaves the resulting half-Vampire with all the same weaknesses as a typical Vampire albeit to a substantially lesser degree.  They are sensitive to light, will slowly burn in the sun, and must consume blood in order to survive.  Interestingly enough they are one of the few breeds of Vampire capable of reproducing.

Nosferatu - Sometimes called the Plague Vampire as they tend to be carriers for numerous diseases.  In fact the easiest way to tell if a Nosferatu is in the area is if the local population is noticeably sick.  Nosferatu are one of the most common breed of Vampire due to their ability to pass on their condition, much like a disease.  Thus one Nosferatu left unchecked could potentially lead to dozens if not hundreds more being sired.  What sets Nosferatu apart is their fang placement.  Unlike other breeds a Nosferatu's fangs are its front teeth, giving them a distinct rodent look.  The comparison is even further cemented by the fact they can transform into rats rather than bats or mist like other breeds.

Succubus - Everything about a Succubus is meant to attract their victims.  Thus making them and their male counterparts, Incubus, unique among Vampire breeds.  Further distinguishing them is that they do not necessarily need to feed on blood to acquire life energy (I will allow the reader's imagination to fill in the gaps in this).  They also do not burn in sunlight, and due to their seductive nature are easily invited into dwellings.  However unlike other breeds Succubus and Incubus are unable to feed on any other living creature besides human.  It is for these reasons that the Succubus has been declared by the Department to be the single most dangerous breed of Vampires.

Well there you have it, four entirely distinct breeds of Vampire.  Real quick I want to note that in my head this universe does in fact have more than 4 Vampire breeds; including one based around a Leech, one with Mandibles, one with a long suction tongue, one that is actually a result of a lycan that is turned, and of course the more classic fang-faced bloodsucker.  But for today I chose to focus on just 4.  Next up I will get into some of the Lycan species of this universe.  Why am I using the term Lycan instead of werewolf you may be asking?  Because Lycan is a broader term that can include other animals.  Anyway, enjoy.
