Too bad by the time it gets finished, most of us will be in our mid twenties (maybe I only acknowledge this due to my age, im 19) and working jobs, never again having that same kind of free time, and Undertale, regardless of player age, will soon fade away as nothing but a distant but well loved memory, the fanbase losing its hype and sinking away into a stasis.

Did I get too sad?

The thing about Undertale is...well, most games dont exactly have the longevity of games like Mario, Pacman, etc etc...at least in popularity. Think about FNAF, its still popular, but its lost its initial rage and spark, and eventually, while I wont say that its going to die out, it wont ever recapture its magic again, and will probably never be at any sort of peak. Mario for example, is a series that, even in its lowest moments, is STILL loved by all, and has NEVER lost its magic or spark to the masses, and as such, is going to remain in the spotlight for time immemorial, until the day that Nintendo dies.

Undertale may have such potential, but its being hampered by the fact that Deltarune is going to take forever to release, which on its own isnt the issue, but rather, some people may utterly drop it due to impatience, forgetting it in general, or a variety of other reasons.

Personally, I think both Mario and Pacman went a little stale a while ago. Love the guys, but still.
Also, I kind of agree with what you're saying, but I think that it's more that Nintendo's a big company that's able to continue cranking out new Mario games every so often. Toby's just one dude, and even though he's putting together a team (like the Avengers!) to make Delta Rune if he doesn't make that team an official thing and keep expanding it, then no, he's not going to be able to sustain its popularity. And also, I'm not sure he should, considering how, as I said, and I believe there's a minority of people that agree with me on this, both Mario and Pacman have gone stale. They're iconic characters who have both advanced the gaming industry in their own ways, but they've become rather repetitive, and neither Nintendo nor Namco seem to want to expand their worlds in any meaningful way. I'd personally prefer that this game and its spin-offs become classic gems for all of us to look back and enjoy.
My initial response was, more or less, my own personal view. I'm going to be playing this game when I'm on my deathbed

Right, I didnt wish to imply that no one would like undertale anymore. Furthermore, there is a good reason aside from what those games did to the Video Game industry that makes them so well remembered and you know, LOVED today. Even when they grow stale, the games, should you give them a shot, are still great, and well designed, and most of all, FUN. One last thing, is that I dont want Toby to do it for popularity's sake, but im just saying that he may end up failing in a way should such a worst case scenario actually occur in his work. Put it this way, Duke Nukem Forever, even if that game and franchise was...amazing in any way, which they werent, that game was forgotten about and blundered about for years, and when it finally came out, it had little fanfare, EVEN FROM DUKE NUKEM FANS! That game took 11 YEARS to make. Im not saying that games cant or shouldnt have such time given to them, but at the same time, there are very few games that I can accept taking that long to come out, and can even see maintaining some hype and series love overall.
