Description There were these sheets of blue watercolor paper lying around for ages and I was just dying to use them...!

Medium: Watercolors and gouache on blue bockingford 300g/m
Time: 6 days?

Since I'm blind and can't see any tiny details for a while, I took the opportunity to splash color around with meh new number 5 brush *dies at the series 7 brushes*! It was a pain to scan though... (four times larger than my normal paintings' size! )

So where is the person after whom the whole painting is named? See those two ignorable (incredibly ugly and fat) legs perched upon the demon's shoulder? XD That be Lady Kelari! (Kweh... I've given her legs fatter than Fenrir's... >.< )

Random info on Kelari (skip ahead if bored!):
----------------------
Lady Kelari was/is one of the 32 sages of Seul Noftra, otherwise known as the Goddess of Destruction. And true to the title given to her, she loved all sorts of chaos and death that sprouted up from her schemes. So one day, when Kaos approached her, complaining about the boredom of their very peaceful life, she made him a sword that would keep him and his warring armies entertained. But within that sword she hid a curse that whomever use it would only end up bringing greater chaos (and greater entertainment to her).

As expected her plans played out accordingly, and years later with that very sword a silly hero slew the God of wind (whom she very much wanted dead). But there Kelari's intents backfired upon her, and rather than her recieving greater power of the slain, she was trapped forever in her own city, by that very sword.

She wasn't to be thwarted though. She continued to be a pain and tried to find a way out for centuries to come! XD
----------------------

Originally I had just wanted to make Kaos' sword and Kalor's shield looking cool but kweh... with the random splashes and meh silly drawing, stupid Fenrir and his very unimportant sword have ended up the main focus! >.<

Ah... and no, these aren't the silly heros who slew the God of wind.

[ - The scanner made the right side scans too bright and the left side ones too dull! Does it show in the piecing together?

- Meep... Aimon is so very not pretty... (probably the most boring looking heroine ever >.< )]

Since it's just a blah paint sketch, I left it as it is, but I'd love to know which areas need more work? (if I ever get round to touching up on some stuff...)

Have you ever tried colouring somebody else's lineart? Can I one day commission you to water-colour one of my drawings?

Nope. I've actually never colored anyone else's work, though I would have loved to. (Do architecture masterplans and elevations count? ) But oh, I would love to try to color one of your works! And no, you wouldn't have to commision me. >.>' (Kweh? Commission?! Wa! )

[Actually, I've been dying to make fanart of your charries after hearing your story, but I wouldn't dare... since you've never shown them here ever!]

hmmmmmm.....
actually, I might have one idea that would go perfectly with your watercolours. omg. I'm supposed to be doing stuff for university, so I'll email you about this later.

O_________O;;
... ... .. *instantly sticks 5 stars to this and a 6th one for being all blue-ish!*
Love love LOVE how you draw magic so easily with..well no any digital touches!! I mean..lookie its all action..moving..epic! No matter how few people you drew.. could be even two but when you draw action scenes they look like action scenes! You can see the movements, the magic and how it all happens and the pic is like a photo of the scene as it froze the time for a moment to capture it all!! THAT I love in your work! People normally throw a hell lot of brushes,sparkles whatever to create that..you don`t. You just use your hands and your tools and you still create the magic much better than others ^__^ and on top of that all your pics have amazing stories ~ not the usual "that one fell in love with that one so they do whatever" XD;
And... just for your information.. Aimon is among my fave characters of yours T_T along with Fenrir ~

Yakra In reply to Exarrdian [2007-02-13 10:16:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!! ^____^ This is probably the only reason why I keep making so many horrid fight-ey pics - I really really want to capture movement! Or atleast the feeling of it. So to hear that you actually find some of that in this... thank you! ^_^

Ah, I'm glad you like Aimon. Sometimes I find her a very boring charrie compared to the others - in character and in looks. (I still like her though - unpretty stern priestess! XD) Heh heh... Fenrir...
[Fenrir: 'what can I say... I'm so irresistible..!' XD *preen*]

........ "blah paint sketch"? T__T Are you crazy? T_____T I saw this and was like "Whoa! this is like totally some boss fight out of rpg >_ and read artist note and aye seems like that indeed!!

Its stunning! My jaw dropped and my spine shivered! (and it wasn't from a loud bird chirp into my ear) You exaggerate about the legs >_>
They are fine! I'm probably abd at legs D:

Besides.. as some comedian said, in older days the bigger women were more desirable and authoritive.. just look at statues and paintings and such XD

And that demon is just...sweet! Caught mye ye first(since it dominant on page being so big XD)
and dang.. just makes ya dive straight into the action XD

The heroes looks so mighty.. T_T and love all the action.. >_< Its really so cool how you can make the scene unfold like that!

Yakra In reply to EvilTelephone [2007-02-09 09:53:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I did treat it like a sketch though since I got too, too lazy at the feet (swoosh to cut them off! XD). But yay! You liked the demon! I can't draw monsters/demons/dragons properly horrifying enough for the life of me... They all end up so... happy looking!

Heh heh... bigger women being more desirable and authoritive? XD I guess that might actually work for Kelari. *consoles herself by that fact*

(Actually... this popped up while I was thinking of an actual rpg boss fight! Have you played Vagrant Story?)

ahh so beautiful... i love how u make things transparent and mix it with solids and gah its just awesome all around.

So i was looking at all ur wonderful paintings and thinking i'd like to try some gouache. Problem is, i have no idea how to get all the awesome effects u manage to...just wondering, if u have time, for a couple tips for a beginner? :3

oh and maybe a good brand of gouache so i know what to buy

Again, i really love all ur paintings...they're so unique and expressive. They're all so dynamic and vibrant and just amazing...really ur power and ability to manipulate the paint is just incredible and inspiring- and its rare to find things so different and wonderful.

And i know u like critiques, but i honestly don't think there's much i can say about this one...i keep looking, cuz i do want to help ^^, but i can't find anything....i think its because i'm learning what ur style is like (O_o if that makes sense? )

Yakra In reply to ashleyzadra [2007-02-09 10:18:35 +0000 UTC]

^_^ Thank you! Ah.... I'm just surprised you liked it that much...?

Em... gouache tips - well, I actually use meh gouache in two ways. One is this, 'normal' paintings. For my other works in which I specify 'gouache on wasli', its not exactly the bottled gouache one gets.

For the gouache on wasli, I first process the gouache till it becomes the base white pigment (safaida!). That becomes the very base of all my colors, which I make individually? Em... that paint is gouache but not really at the same time? I just don't know what else to call it?

In my normal paintings though, I usually work in the watercolor areas first and then for the highlights, wooshes and overall effects I use the bottled gouache. I like the extra texture you can give by just piling up the gouache! Ah... and I only use white? I've never found much use for other colors? (Though some of the brighter ones look so delicious! )

Ah... and you only get Pelikan here (Pelikan designer gouache, methinks its called). I actually got in the habit of sticking it in meh paintings because of the minature paintings.

I hope that helped? If you want more info I could always bore you some more! XD

Lol ^^ thanks very much!!!~

i'm not sure why i liked this one so much... i guess it was the action, which is a nice difference from all my pictures, which are all so undynamically stiiiifffff ;n;

There was something bugging me tho, something about their faces that seemed off- not so much to take away from the picture too much at all, but just enough for someone looking to critique something to notice ^^

i noticed that u made their head shapes a bit too flat and the placement of their facial features are all...not sure how to describe it...somewhat crunched in the left corner of the face. If u shift the right eyes down and to the left and the same to the one girl's nose that'll probably fix it. I know u said this was a kinda sketch- but do u usually use guidelines when making faces? if not, they really do help- especially as a pre-spacial planning sorta thing. Hope that made sense and helps

Thanks so much for the info on painting^^ So basically, a layer of white for the base, then watercolor for the transparent stuff? mixed with gouache for the more solid stuff and thicker gouache for the thicker looking stuff? makes sense ^^ sounds kinda complicated tho....i'll have to practice it up then

Again~ thanks so so so much

Yakra In reply to ashleyzadra [2007-02-10 11:33:51 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes... the faces... You always point that out and I always mess it up again! (usually all problem stems from Izul's nose... it's just so annoyingly pointy! *excuse excuse XD*)

And no no! Not a layer of gouache for the base! Not unless if you wish to paint in style 1 (that is 'gouache on wasli')! Aaaahhh... I explain things horridly confusingly, don't I? I usually just work in watercolors and use give the highlights by gouache. (Even the inking in this one was done in watercolors, not in acrylics or anything...)

It's easy! And covers up mistakes too! XD

ashleyzadra In reply to Yakra [2007-02-10 14:46:32 +0000 UTC]

lol;; i'm sorry for pointing it out so much....i guess i must sound like a broken record...but its because there's nothing else wrong with any of ur pictures! ^^

oh ok, well that makes better sense ^^ but why does painting on wasli make a difference? isn't it just a type of canvas? *i really don't know these things...and i probably should...*

nonono- not confusingly at all! In fact, ur explanation really made me want to try it!!

thanks again for all the help

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yakra In reply to ashleyzadra [2007-02-11 12:23:06 +0000 UTC]

No you aren't a broken record at all! I just feel very silly for always repeating the same mistake. >.< (I'm blind...)

Wasli is a special handmade paper made for miniature painting (or illuminated manuscripts?) - created by layering papers with bookbinder's paste. It's actually the technique of painting which is more different than the paper. Otherwise its just a normal, extra, extra absorbent paper on which one could do anything.

The "Ugly demon Giant" is pretty awesome! Reminds me of Gandharan art. Excellent lighting, colors and details, throughout the rest of the pic too!

*Release the rambles!*

It's sooo dynamic, with all the gestural expressive brush strokes. The poses, foreshortening and overall composition looks pretty good too.

It's not a "blah paint sketch" It's a painting. anymore work on this would have minimized the impact *Encourager of leaving things incomplete* I love how everything fades to white towards the... right (unintentional rhyming ). And I also like the way you didn't rub the drawing left around the border tons!

I think Kelari's leg's are fine, not as thin as you usually draw them, but they don't look odd. Not showing her face leaves a lot of mystery, which is pretty cool. As for Aimon, You say boring, I say her face has character! It's good to see a non-pretty heroine.

Ugly demon giant be based off poor goddess Durga! XD (and so the warped gandharan art influence )

Ehem.... originally I had always thought of Kelari as small and petite like Io (Squeh... Io? Petite? More like anorexic....) but me thinks she's going to be huuuuge and big from now on! XD But yes! I shall take your great advice on leaving this as is *is ready to become a believer in leaving things incomplete! ('it'll ruin the impact... I wasn't lazy AT ALL!!' *excuse* XD)*

Yay for non-pretty heroines! (and she's got a boring looking hero with her to match too! XD)
