I would like it, if it allowed me submit. Drove me nuts trying. In the end I had to send it to myself at work and submit from there....and then I wished I hadn't - cos not only was it a bad photo, but maybe the WIP was better anyway!

Hadn't seen this one...it is a very softly rendered drawing that brings out the humanity and personality of the subject (and of the artist!)
If the hat is any indication of the direction you are headed, this one will be a real standout as to tone, surface, and illusional depth. I know that you enjoy more expressive images, but do give this one a proper chance, as it has an appeal that other super realist drawings ordinarily lack. This one combines technical proficiency with feeling.
Before you try more smudge tools, take a try at using paint brushes which are subtractive and quite amazing in their effect on pencil drawings. You may never go back!

Well, I am touched that it evokes such feeling in you, although I would prefer not to make you sad.
It's interesting though - I realised I had not quite captured his original expression, but I had not thought much about the one I bestowed, except to note there was less hint of a smile. When I read your words and then looked at it though, it was as if there was a great sadness there, that was being held back.
Thank you for giving it more depth than it might otherwise have carried.

I have been dealing with a couple of root canal jobs, the abcess that made one an emergency, the medications for pain and infection, and weekly visits to my dentist, to space the repair around the healing. Which is the reason I've been looking but not commenting lately. So now, I feel like I'm back in the world again.

You were the 1st person to tell me my work was recognisable as mine....I never thought it was, but people whose judgement I trust tell me it, so I know it must be right.
I thought this was was pretty typically mine, u know - a bit heavy-handed, something not quite right, probably around the eyes.....so it's really interesting to me that you think it's different. It was certainly an attempt to be....I had checked how people who draw really well work, you know - the ones who makes drawings look like photos - and I set out to make it a bit more realistic than my usual stuff....but of course I got fed up before I got there, haha. I knew what else I should do to improve it, but hell.....I was missing colour and stuff! lol

the thing about it that seems different to me is the depth. it seems more 3D than your other stuff (not like its a good or bad thing), so if super-realism is your goal youre def. on the right track.
personally, i'm more of a color-er, just like you. at times i think practicing to be more precise would help me out, but its too fun just to be loose haha.

Nah, I've never wanted super-realism, but I do want to be able to produce good likenesses, and once I can do that, then to apply some wild interpretations......I actually feel torn all the time between trying to reproduce what I see, and portraying what I feel, but Ive just been having this little phase of tightening things up a bit. Or trying to.
Loose is the most fun, and I still suspect my spontaneous stuff is the most real. You have to remember though, that I'm trying to catch up with a period of not painting that goes back to before you were a twinkle in your father's eye, as they say....

Heheh....I used a mechanical with a 4b lead in it, a wooden water soluble 4b and a really old wooden one that the grade has been rubbed off, but I would guess its an HB.
If I had had any hs I woulda used them.
Oh yes - and cotton buds, and cotton wool (no rubbing with fingers) the eraser on my mechanical, a kneadable one and a crap one (that sometimes blend and sometimes erases, almost at random).

I could never do that. Teacher made us feel like it was cheating. I know; no such thing as cheating. You use the tools that are around. How can using a blending tool be cheating when they had us rooting about in the parking lot for a proper twig? The lesson: anything can be a drawing tool. Bastard. But I'm forever ruined for the smudge tools (canβt even smudge in Photoshop). I know; it's a sad thing really. I... -sniff

If your work is anything to by, it seems your teacher was a master. Cant argue with the results.
I can understand the rule....I think I was restrained with the cheating (haha) but as mentioned to RTyson, having looking at what the people producing photorealistic drawings do, they use cotton buds and funny things on the end of pencils (not erasers, other weird things) I used one of those a little too, but I find the ones I got dont blend so much as remove a layer.
Dont cry. Your stuff is too beautiful to want it smudged.

Now that's a good drawing. Good energy about the page and good tone. How big is this piece?
I ask
1.) Because I think it could stand alone, and
2.) Because you could run off some copies and paint/color into them. That way you're freed up to experiment and if it doesn't work out you still have a strong original piece to work from and finally
3.) Hell, I donβt even think this needs color, muted or otherwise. Besides being a striking likeness to the reference pic, it's a good enough piece of work to stand on its own
...Anyway, just my humble observation.

Thank you so much for saying such nice things....I know you always say nice things about my work cos we r buddies and you got a big heart, but these are a different kind of nice.
It's A4 size.
I think the idea of printing a copy to do the colour thing on is right....and I could do more to improve the drawing.....*but*.....alas, it is too late.
Ive added colour to the face and now I need more lightness that I can get from coloured pencils and I'm a little stuck....if I use acrylic then I wont be able to fine tune afterwards with pencils, cos it flakes (I did that on my pic of Ali that I couldnt bear to finish or submit after killing it with pencil of top of acrylic on top of pencil). If I use gouache (which Ive never used, and only have a mega cheap set of) then it will either be so thick it will obscure all the pencil work, or if I think it a lot, the whole thing risks becoming all wavy and soggy and god-knows-what.
How does bristol board generally react to a good soaking? I guess I may need to run some tests.
I haven't totally fuggled it up yet, I dont think, but am certainly at quite a tricky crossroads!

Hmm. Since it's A4, maybe you could have the local copy professionals (do you have Kinkoβs in Brighton?) print it on something sturdy like some Strathmore rag paper or a good heavy weight crescent board.
Or, lay down the colors with the pencil, then copy it onto the heavier paper or onto some canvas. Yeah! Canvas. That way, at the end of your project youβll end up with two pieces. Hell, you could even scan it into the computer and try to paint with the compuβ¦ No. That might drive you completely nutters, as it has driven me (at a rate of speed incalculable by primitive Earthly mathematic equations)
