beautifully rich in tone and color, and such excellent contrast!

Robbie
excuse the late reply
but i am both humbled and honored that you consider my meager pics for your canvas...
its been kinda hectic..but i have been reading the comments ..*rushes off to catch a pee*
ok..words like "astute". "dynamic" etc...means diddly squat to me..what matter is words like "emotion", "soul", etc.
what you have managed to do is capture the essence of the moment. And that is the most impressive. Having experienced her hardship and suffering first hand..i am really glad that i could relay the message across so vivdly to those who havent experienced it...You still have the impactual objective to capture it on canvas..and in other words
thank you

Thank you, Malachai
I need to paint her again. As mentioned, this one just took on a life of it's own and as I painted I think I wanted to help heal her, somehow it didnt seem appropriate to show the fΓΊll graphic signs of her distress, but at the same time, I feel I need to try again, at some point.
I do think it's one of my best paintings, and I thank you deeply for bringing the images of these children to us, for intially having encouraged me to try and paint them, for the inpsiration......not only in your amazing photographs but also simply in your presence.

This is a stunning portrait, I especially love the depth her eyes have and the way the dress has vibrant color but not so much detail that it distracts from her face. Amazing work!

how is it possible to capture ancient and new at the same time?
the perfect yin and yang is the dark brown hues in the skin against the cool lightness of the dress.
then the conifident brushwork defining the subtle interplay of tones in the skin. i can tell you had a good time doing this one.
damned good.

Thank you kindly, my friend.
It was actually a difficult one for me, because I set out with one idea, but something else wanted to come thΓ³ugh. At every stage i didnt think it was really working out, and then suddenly, when I thΓ³ught I was about 1/3 done, there it was, and it seemed to be complete - much to my amazement. lol

See, that's what happens when your work is alive. You, being polite and a sensitive soul, know well enough to let the brush and canvas and pigment do its thing.
You're the channel, the work is the basin where the river collects after is flows through you. That's the process.
That's how we make art!

Your figurative work is really getting better and better.
In terms of colour, it's much more representational than we are used to see you painting with, but that's not a bad thing in the least. It's exciting to see you experiment.
Love the texture and colours in the background - could get lost in the wonderful rivers of motion and colour - really great!
I would like to see you get more impressionistic, I think you have the ability, as it's not the easiest way to work, but something about your style tells me you could do it beautifully.
x

Thanks very much. Funnily enough I set out to make this much more impressionistic, it was going to be in raging blues and purples with pink and orange accents, and have the minimum of brush work to give the effect i wanted....but sometimes (usually) my work just takes its own direction once I start...lol. God help me if I ever get a very specified commission!

as eurofox said, you capture the soul of the people you paint, and that's great! And i like your word usage of dumbing down, was listening to Lupe Fiasco's Album and he's got a track called "Dumb it down", where he conceptualises people telling him to dumb down his lyrics, either coz he's too intellectual or his lyrics are too inspirational or that record companies won't think it would sell in the hip hop market. Anyway back to da point, this painting is touching... to say the least

Wow, it looks like your work is taking off to new levels here, Robbie. The emotional involvement of the viewer with this piece is very well managed.

this is a weird one as her lack of expression actually makes for a more emotional image if that makes any sense ?
nice work robbie you been a busy bee by the looks of things.

Thanks Simon.....that's the really striking thing about Malachai's photos of the children in the Congo, they mostly do have very stoical little faces, but their eyes tell another story, so if I managed to convey a little of that, I feel I'm moving in the right direction.
Yes, I have been real busy this Eater break, I've just stayed in and painted, have actually got 3 others in various stages of completion - been off since Thursday and just been out to shop round the corner once - lol.

Man oh man, it's like she can see straight into your soul. You have a special talent for not just capturing a likeness, but the spirit of the person as well.
