Description I might do a lot more to it, but I'm not sure.
I thought I would record this stage anyway. It hasnt come out very well on the photograph.

i like the saturation in this photo better than the paleness in the other, even though it's a little blurry...and i sympathize- i know how difficult it can be to get a good shot, i can never seem to do justice to paintings with even an idiot proof camera.

all that said, the painting is coming along beautifully. Beautifully expressive and rich in tone.

Thanks very much, Joseph, I appreciate the encouraging feedback.
This version is more popular I think, and I kind of miss the heavy background, also the 2nd pic was a little lighter than the real thing.

I think it may be finished now, but I broke my camera and am waiting for the replacement.

Well, I approached this wardsback, but glad that I did since seeing the more finished rendition I can appreciate the base foundation of the piece. It is a superb combination of color, lighting and composition that lend themselves to allowing you to move into any direction you choose with confidence.

Bryon is a gem, sweet and astute in equal measure!
I guess nobody would guess to look at out work, I think we probably both give an illusion of confidence, albeit in very different ways.

Gunzino In reply to Yamenja [2007-08-28 14:28:59 +0000 UTC]

ha ha ha! It's my continent, but it takes a person to just understand what another person is going through regardless of where you're from. There are people in this continent that wouldn't have captured or got what you had portrayed, either coz they haven't got the skills or they don't have that compassion. But you did a good job, really! And i can't do what you did visually but hopefully when I rhyme I can portray emotion like your painting did. WELL DONE FOR REAL!!

Simzzzz [2007-08-27 19:47:59 +0000 UTC]

looking great Yamenja, again your use of colour to create realistic skin tones is apparent, you really can handle colour very well, this is similar to your last painting where you used warm reds which created a vibrant hue over the image, it helps push the figure forward against the background purplish / blue tones that are reciding colour.
What medium is it ? oil or acrylics ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yamenja In reply to Simzzzz [2007-08-27 20:07:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, Simon. Your encouragement means a lot.

Medium wise this one is a bit of everything....started with acrylics, then a bit of pastel, light spray of varnish to fix it, then some oils on the face and a bit on the t-shirt and lots more acrylic on the background...haha. I'm now finishing it in oils, trying to keep them quite thin.

The background lines radiating from him (or to him) make him look glorified. He has such a troubled expression relative to the original photo. It adds new possibilities to the story. I like it much. Each thing you do gets better.

It feels a very precarious process to me, so such an encouraging comment from such a discerning artist means a great deal to me.

Hey - lovely use of colour again. You have made the portrait look almost like a Catholic icon, although I think the background and foreground could be tied together in some way so they have a connection... maybe by bringing through some more of those colour accents.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yamenja In reply to NotTheRedBaron [2007-08-27 19:08:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Bryon.
Yes, I think I will tie them in a little more, I just wanted to submit at this point because I'm so nervous about losing what I have - I think maybe they do connect a little more that you can from the photograph, and I do want to keep them a bit divided, as I am trying to represent the earthly plane with the figure and the ethereal with the background, but yes, I agree they would benefit from more of a connection.

Can you see the influence of our discussions about rough edges?....thats another reason I submitted at this point.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NotTheRedBaron In reply to Yamenja [2007-08-27 19:40:54 +0000 UTC]

LOL - what are you like... I am beginning to get a better sense of your lack of confidence after meeting you last week.

I think it's almost more important as an artist to trust your instinct. If you think the piece is already at a good stage then I would sit on it before even thinking about working further on it...

Trust yourself because you know you have it in you - and I know from meeting you and from our wonderful time in the gallery that you understand what works so don't question your abilities sweetie!

You are so fab...I'm a bigger fan than ever since meeting you!

I think I'm just going through a bit of a transition. I do have belief in myself as an artist deep down, but Ive messed up so many pics that in the short-term I need to learn to be more careful, haha.
