The beloved 'Queen of the Merchant Marine' was barely 18 months old when the United States of America entered the Second World War. Until then the young liner ship had been sticking to safe waters. Avoiding conflict proved impossible. Two Nazi spies were found amongst her crew in early 1941, part of the largest espionage conviction in the country's history.

After her honorable discharge from the US Navy (who renamed her USS West Point and employed her as a troop carrier, and awarded her five medals) the reborn SS America blossomed into a beautiful, popular and successful transatlantic ocean liner, voyaging regularly along the route she'd been intended for, traveling between New York, Ireland, France and Germany, and enjoyed by tens of thousands of travelers and pleasure seekers.

In 1964 she was sold to the Chandris Group of Greece, and I will end the story here, it is a nondramatic slide downhill from this point.
