Why is it called Westsylvania? Is there a woodland in that area? I'm curious.

In this timeline the answer was yes, but having spent frankly an abusrd amount of time studying martian maps, I can say that's an absurd prospect, as the western coast of Tharsis has a lot of varying topographical differences that would lead to a more varied series of biomes... also I'm over the whole "Less States. Bigger States" thing that every map maker seems to go through in their beginnings. My new map does feature a state called Westylvania, but its much smaller, and wrests on the heart ofΒ Lycus Sulci, which is a terrain feature defined elevated rougher terrain with rolling shallow hills, similar to Pennsylvania. The topography makes it preferable to support a woodland area there.Β

They're not. Elysium is an island in this timeline.

That's supposed to be water. Its in the style of old wikipedia maps. I haven't made anything like that in a while.

This was a previous incarnation of the Second Renaissance, so its no longer cannon, but there is no Russia by this point in history. In this version of the TL, climate change literally splits Sibera and European Russia apart, and the European Russians end up joining the EU, and yes I realize that sounds kinda stupid now.

Was going to post that you had forgotten Mexico, Korea, Turkey, Canada and Australia, but then checked out the Second Renaissance maps and it mostly made sense.
Why does Africa have a colony, though, but not Turkestan? Surely if the Baikonur Cosmodrome is anything to go by Turkestan ought to be among the more established of the space powers? The same argument could be applied to the Oceanic Union, whose economies are more advanced than the African ones.
And, referring back to the first paragraph of this post, if Mexico and Korea have been assimilated by the US and China respectively shouldn't there be more representation of them in the placenames of their ruling dynasties? Like - say, for instance - Tenochtitlan II as part of Jefferson. The British and French may likewise not be too impressed with their omission from the European regions.

These colonies weren't established by government sponsored space programs. A single private firm was contracted to set up these colonies, this is the same organization that terraformed the planet.

Check out my Second Renaissance Page, everything in there is related to this map. Long Story Short Russia was absorbed by the European Federal Union in the 2020s.

Of all the terraformed Mars projects I've done, the best land has always been where you have the US and Chinese parts, and NE India. Everything else is pretty much frozen wasteland, especially Olympus. Only thing valuable there would be a prime location for a space elevator on Pavonis Mons.

Africa is thousands years behind the rest of the World. Tribal wars, poor ethics, poor work ethics... I don't believe they catch up before 2200.

YNot1989 In reply to Hyta [2010-09-06 09:56:23 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't say thousands, they only fight with 50 year old Kaleshnikovs these days. But don't sell Africa short on space tech, there is potential.

Cultural development is more important than technology. If you give technology to someone with poor ethics, it will only make his victims more numerous. It will take a few generations to get over these tribal states, don't you think?
