In the Iberia a vertical line division would be better, than an horizontal one, lusitanians are on the west, hispanics east.Β Β

Shouldn't Iceland be a Scandinavian territory as well? Icelanders are ethnic Norwegians, there is a separatist movement in favour of joining Norway (which Norwegians are quite fond of), the entire history, language and culture is Scandinavian. Iceland is even more Scandinavian than Denmark.

I thought you guys had some weird, vaguely racist law about how non-Icelandic people can't live in Iceland for more than a year?

Keseko In reply to YNot1989 [2015-03-20 18:33:42 +0000 UTC]
No, that's just the policy of one political party in the parliament, the Independence party is very conservative and full of people who are so filled with pride and are fond of the US (mostly because the USA was the first in the world to recognize Iceland's independence). But that has changed now. But even during that time when that law was in use, foreigners from Norway, Faroe Islands and Greenland were still viewed as fellow Icelanders. And Iceland, being a member of the Nordic council, welcomes other Nords to Iceland as well. Today non-Norwegians or non-Icelanders are allowed to stay as long as they learn basic Icelandic (though they are allowed to speak their own language, but are expected to at least understand basic Icelandic), they can also stay if they are married to an Icelander or if they are studying or if they have some occupation.

Ah, well thanks for clearing that up. As for the Pro-US status of Iceland, I didn't think it was mutual. About 60 years ago there were plans to annex Greenland AND Iceland by a handful of Senators. The thought was that they'd be great strategic positions against the Soviets.

Well, it's a good thing they didn't. Still, our first president was not democratically elected and was a real bastard and a slime. He even allowed the American military to stay here only to back up his communist witch hunts. Anyone who didn't want to be in NATO or criticized the Independence party would be labelled as a communist. Although it was not illegal to be a communist in Iceland, people who were suspected by the military were kept on a list of "possible revolutionaries". There was one man arrested though, but it was later revealed that he was not a communist, he just hated having the US military here.

Cool map and nice to see the Northern Irish border is finally gone. Just finished reading a book called "New Ireland" that our old Irish Prime Minister Garret Fitzgerald wrote during the troubles, he suggested letting the locals deal with local matters via regional assemblies and scrapping the border nice to see he was ahead of his time

just so you know, Northern Ireland is incredibly iffy on merging with Ireland (look up The Troubles), so in your timeline, riots would most definitely be prominent in it.

I'm hoping that after a devistating war with an alien civilization bent on enslaving humanity, the pseudo-religious bullshit would just seem kinda silly.

It actually is, the Planetary government took a somewhat authoritarian stance when the War ended, but that was for reconstruction, after things stabilized the Planetary government started shifting more power to the States.

I don't really get the point of the straight borders, Borders like that just don't work in densely populated, complex and culturally diverse areas such as Europe.

They're drawn that way for the same reason they're drawn that way in America: To prevent cultural isolation by making borders seem arbitrary.

YNot1989 In reply to GibbleGarp [2013-03-05 09:12:51 +0000 UTC]
A city called New Washington. During the war the capitals of each nuclear power were destroyed by the invaders, DC did the worst out of all of them because DC proper isn't as spread out as say Moscow or London, and the impact crater quickly flooded with the spill off from the Potomac. The "John Conner/Master Chief/George Washington of this universe happened to be an American and because the new Congress (at the time just the UN) couldn't agree on a world capital (most of the Great cities eligible turned it down because the new government buildings would eat up a TON of land) they handed the power to declare a capital to the President, who chose the only city on Earth that was both a large hole in the ground, and originally built from scratch to be a Capital city and nothing more. New Washington was largely modeled after the old one, thought he Capital Building is considerably larger and more modern looking, and the new Executive Mansion looks nothing like the old White House. And the Capital Mall is bordered by monuments to the "Great Leaders of Humanity." Basically leaders from the 20th Century onward (The Defense Department features a statue of Georgy Zhukov and the Department of Science and Technology features Albert Einstein) with a few exceptions (The rebuilt Washington monument and Lincoln Memorial).
