He is old enough to remember the scourge that flattened his village and killed the adults in the humans' conquest to subdue and use the zhenniao's poison. Yun Fai was the eldest in the brood with Lixue being their youngest sister when it all happened. The advance scouts beheaded his parents and uncles and took him and his siblings to sell at an exhorbitant price. The three children were thrown in a lonely cell and he swore that they will all stay together no matter what happened. The first to go was his baby sister, whom they tore from his arms and sold to a powerful warlord. Yun Fai resisted and received the most terrible beating he has ever known in his life. He was next to go, however, his path is way different from his brother and sister, who were trained to neutralize rivals using their poisons. As a child, Yun Fai has a feminine face, and it is what moved a corrupt merchant to purchase him.

He was taken to live in a lavish place, but he was put to live inside a glass cage. They dressed him in luxurious, and beautiful clothing and doted on him, but they clipped his wings and chained up his feet so he wouldn't be able to escape. They taught him to sing and play musical instruments to amuse guests and his owner, and his only escape are the many, many books and scrolls that were piled up in one side of his glass cage. He didn't grow beautiful and feminine as his owner expected, and his voice has deepened and he cannot sing as well as he used to. The owner was secretly considering to sell him to the slaughter so that his body parts can be used to make poisons. Yun Fai was oblivious of this, and one day, a winged shogun came and had a look at him and told his owner that he is willing to purchase Yun Fai at a remarkable amount. The transaction was done the very same day, and Yun Fai, having an extreme case of Stockholm syndrome, resisted when he was being taken. He hollered and fought, but years in the cage with minimum activity rendered him weak and frail, and the winged shogun who calls himself Shibien informed him that he'd rather see Yun Fai in his household alive than being chopped up and steeped in a cauldron.

The winged, white shadow of a female zhen beside the said shogun struck something in him, and after a lengthy explanation and reminiscing, Yun Fai finally realized that it is his blood sister right there in front of him. Seeing Lixue convinced him to come with them and although he is still a little distrustful of Shibien, he had vowed to stick by the latter's ideals. Presently, he is holed up in the Spine and is the one responsible for all the technology and amenities that they enjoy in the clan.
