„It‘s open!“ Mercedes called from the kitchen as she heard a knock at the front door.

She didn‘t knew who to expect since her parents were out working and wouldn‘t be back until later this evening. Her back was turned to the doorway, so she didn‘t see the person who entered the kitchen just now.

„Um… Hi“ Sam‘s voice floated through the hallway, coming closer, and she stopped working on the cookie dough.

She turned around, staring at him for a moment before she remembered her manners.

„Hey. I didn‘t expect to see you here.“

She mentally flinched at her bluntness. Could she say something more stupid? They looked at each other in silence, but eventually Sam spoke up.

„I just… We used to be together, and more importantly, we used to be friends. And we can still be, if you want to.“

He handed her a container, obviously filled with baked cookies.

„We made them earlier and I thought it‘d be nice to bring some around.“ He trailed off, feeling awkward in his skin visibly in this moment.

Mercedes took it from him, smiling lightly. „Thanks. Wanna help me with these?“

She motioned to the bowl standing on the table with her hands, covered in flour. He nodded, moving over to it and started kneading the dough. They worked in silence for a few minutes before Sam spoke up again.

„So how‘s - what‘s his name again? Marcus?“ He made an effort not to look at her, and she answered shyly.

„Look, I‘m sorry, okay? You were gone, he asked me out and it was nice enough so we kinda ended up together.“

It was still a little awkward, but they started to relax around each other again, like they used to.

„Listen, I just want you to know - and I‘m not saying I want it to happen, but - if you two ever break up, I‘ll be here for you. Always.“

Mercedes looked at him, her expression serious, but as she nodded, a genuine smile started building on her face.
