The Gulf wasn't that great to begin with. Before the spill, it was 71/100 on the environmental reading, right now it's at about 66/100. This was due to over-fishing, pollution, and losing the marshes by blocking the Mississippi from doing her job. So we have to make it better than before, as the Gulf will still get hurt after the oils gone.

Sadly, I remember the horror of seeing oil in the water first-hand. Living on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, I would listen to the local news as they interviewed people who were afraid of the oil for selfish reasons. Sure, there were stories about the animals dying because of it, but the ratio seemed uneven.

Animals died because of ignorant reason... It's heart-wrenching to see these poor creatures covered in slime just because they were doing what they did every day.

People need to learnt o take care of the oil better so this dosnt happen, have they ever thought of putting it in safer containers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meihua In reply to BlasphemyTwins [2012-04-25 18:51:20 +0000 UTC]

Safer containers? The oil wasn't in containers yet when the spill occurred. It exploded from the bottom of the ocean and the pipes used to bring it to the surface due to unsafe drilling practices.

Though it's not for the contest, I did a literature piece about a girl who spent her summers and the beach and unknowingly befriended the spirit of the ocean, only to lose him to the oil spill. It would mean a lot to me if you would read it. Thank you for all your hard work to help save the environment. You're fantastic, `yuumei . [link]

I'd just like to say that, sure the Gulf spill was bad, but i'm willing to bet at least 9 out of 10 people who read this comment know nothing about the situation in the Niger Delta where they get the equivalent of this spill every few years. Already impoverished people's livelihoods, that's right people living on the coast fish for a living, are being completely and utterly destroyed. The air pollution from burnt and exploded oil is toxic there, and almost nothing is done about it. Know why? Because it's not worth Shell's money to fix up the 40 year old pipelines and oil rigs there. They'd rather just put a few million in the pockets of officials in the Nigerian government and not a word is spoken.

So I guess my message is, educate yourself. I am not criticizing the attention that the Gulf spill got, and the fuss everyone made about it. Rather, I'm glad it's happening just very disappointed that the people of Niger remain unheard, the millions remain unheard while they suffer a fate worse than death at the mercy of Shell and a few other corporations.

Side-of-fries [2011-11-23 19:20:49 +0000 UTC]

I'd just like to say that while sure, the BP spill was bad, but it was nothing compared to the constant spills that are continuing to happen in the Niger Delta. Take a wild guess at what the occupations of the grand majority of those living there is. FISHING, is the answer. And their livelihoods are being torn apart. Not to mention their health, with toxic level of fumes from burnt oil. Never mind the fact that the people affected are already so impoverished that the governments and corporations (namely Shell),ignoring this is like kicking them while they're down.
All this and more, yet I'm willing to bet that nine out of ten people had no grasp of the severity of oil spills there which cumulatively amount to around fifty times the amount of oil spilled in the Gulf.
So if you've taken the time to read this, just ask yourselves why that might be...

This is why I watch you! Its amazing! The Gulf spill was a horrible thing. We need to find some way to be more eco friendly to our world. The fire turning into smoke looks so realistic. Then the little building out on the water has so much detail. The dead bird represents the damage we did that day. This was very popular awhile back and I find it sad that everyone just forgot about it. Its pictures like these that make me want to draw like you. One day I might be able to draw like you but that is far off from now. I will try my best until then and hopefully one day someone will leave a comment like this on one of my pictures.

when I saw this picture, I almost immidiatly burst into tears. I don't know why, but I'm EXTREMELY sensitive about birds and such (like legit, I saw a dead bird on the side of the road the other day, and I cried for twenty minutes over it). It completely broke my heart when I first heard about the oil spill and all of the animals getting affected by it.
