Night Version
This image was inspired by a free Breadley Manning protest I participated in. We were a small group of about 20-30 peaceful protesters met by an overkill of riot police. We dissipated peacefully to avoid arrest but the image of facing against a roll of riot police remained in my mind.
For those not familiar with Bradley Manning, he was the one who leaked the Collateral Murder video to Wikileaks. The video details the slaughter of innocent Iraqi civilians and journalists by American soldiers. Amongst the injured were 2 children whose father was killed. When the journalists' families asked about how they were killed, they were lied to. For revealing the true casualties of war, Manning was put into solitary confinement and tortured without trial. the only problem i have is that its pretty well controversial when it comes to protests and the police because the police is there when there's a disruption in the public area so they stay there to make sure it doesn't grow into a riot.

I'd say a great part of the time it becomes a riot because police antagonize and act inflammatory at many protests in order to rile the crowd up and have a reason to use what would otherwise be excessive force.Β
Although some of the time these days it's not even that, they're just using excessive force.

But remember that it would be generalization to involve all police officers in this situation because of course there are those who cause the problem but they have to take orders of their superiors.

But the problem only exists because the rest allow it to be an issue. If they actually came down on corruption, it wouldn't be an issue (To the same degree. It's very unlikely that it will completely disappear, ofc). But 9/10 cases, they get away with paid vacation, and most of the 'good' cops don't speak out against it, or are silenced by small threats. If they came together those sorts of tactics would have less power.
But, more to the point, the type of men (and women) that are on the riot squads seem predisposed to this sort of thing, although one does have to account for the fact that protests gone wrong tend to get much more coverage.Β
Believe me, I don't think all cops are bad, but I do think there are enough bad cops around that I can't trust any specific policeman, and moreover I don't feel good about supporting them in general because for the most part they do nothing about corruption in the forces. Nothing substantial, at least. Saying and doing are very different things, and a lot of the time there's a lot more saying going on.

Not sure if you were aware, but Manning came out of the closet as transgender. Manning's first name is now Chelsea, and Chelsea Manning uses she pronouns. I'm sure that trans people, myself included, would really appreciate it if you updated the description on this and corrected her name and pronouns.Β
