Katharine ‘Kittin’ Wattinger, mechanic on board the Albatross heavy carrier in the Varsan Air Force, transferred to Project Heimdall while the experimental bomber plane was still being built, in order to get a hang of its tech and ensure its maintenance.

There aren't so many women yet in the Varsan military, but owing to the many campaigns the Empire is engaged in (and considering the Watchers have already been recruiting whatever's a telepath anyway, no matter their gender), Empress Silvanne Astren passed an Act allowing unrestricted enlistment, shortly after being crowned. Kittin was 16 at the time, helping her father and five brothers at their mechanical workshop, and very frustrated that in spite of her real skills, she was too often being passed over for 'the guys' by customers. The Military Equal Opportunity Act gave her the perfect, well, opportunity to sign on for a position where she could work with machines, get all the additional training she needed for free, and whoever came with excuses like 'women aren't meant to fight,' well, she wasn't going to fight, just perform maintenance, right? (She still went through basic boot camp to learn some firearms and close-combat skills, because, well, military.) That came with its lot of problems, but a few broken noses and bruised pairs of testicles later, Kittin was left in relative peace. She had no idea how long she'd remain in the Varsan Air Force, but surelly this would be a stepping stone to having her own workshop someday later.

During the debacle at the Aschen military base, she was the one who witnessed the real Ren ‘waking up’ and reacting to the presence of Watchers, and unfortunately for her, since she was seen in his company, she got lumped in the same boat—except that she’s expendable. She found herself flying for her life with Ren, Korden and Servan on board a not fully run-in Heimdall. Weird stuff ensued.

Kittin has an ambiguous relationship with Ren. She liked him well enough before the Aschen events, but after that, she holds him responsible for the raid on Aschen (which, let’s face it, is indeed his fault), and can’t reconcile the memory she has of the ‘previous, nice Ren’ with the man he really is.
