Description A quick pic to show the scale of the paper feathers I cut for my hummingbird sculptures. I'll typically cut 150-200 per hummingbird, then it's the even fiddlier part of gluing them on one by one!

Still hard to understand your infinite patience.. And just how are they glued without messing them up?Β
If every feather is as meticulously cut as this one...
Very impressive

Must need some SUPER TINY scissors to do that...and LOTS of patience!!!

Patience or madness!

Hummingbirds have such unique feathers. Not sure if making that shape would be any more difficult than other types of feathers, but it impresses me how similar it is to the real thing.

Thank you so much! I do really study a bird before attempting to make it, I like to know it from every angle, map out all the feathers and plan how to attack each and every feather! Bit anal like that

So tiny! Do you use a magnifying glass? Do you cut multiple sheets at once, or do one feather at a time?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZackMclaughlin In reply to Taylor-Call [2015-04-03 09:00:11 +0000 UTC]

Small and fiddly! No magnifying glass, just my eyes and sense of touch I cut one feather at a time, otherwise you don't get the curl of the feather needed for that natural look. The randomness of each feather adds to the overall texture at the end.

I make handmade cards in my family, and I get frustrated getting glue on my fingers with that. I can't imagine trying to glue on feathers of this size!!! That's amazing. I keep getting more and more amazed with every 'behind-the-scenes' post you make.

Showoff! lol

You know, there is this artist that I follow on Instagram I think you would appreciate. She doesn't do 3D like you do, but her work with paper and a blade is amazing! Check out maude_alta when you get a chance and let me know what you think of her work!! She has an Etsy shop too called braveBird, and her website is bravebirdpaperarts.com

Just thought I would like to share one favorite with another! lol

Thank you for the share! I actually found her on Facebook not long ago and follow her on there, such incredibly fine paper cut work, puts mine to shame! She is awesome!

There is nothing that could put your work to shame...not even a real bird! lol

I've followed her on Instagram for almost a year now and I am just constantly blown away by her talent. I think that ifΒ I tried what she does I wouldn't have any fingertips left, or anyΒ blood for that matter! lol

What entrances me the most is how two such spectacular artists such as yourselves can use and manipulate the same medium and come up with such different results!! I find it especially funny how you both like birds so much!

Do you have an Instagram account? If not you should totally get one!!! I searched for you, and while I did find 5, I seriously doubt any of them are you! lol

Well, have a good day, let your creativity take flight, and know that you are appreciated every day for the joy and delight you being others, especially me and my family!!

Ha! Nature is the best at art, full stop I just try to interpret it best I can and bring it into peoples lives. You really are too kind!

I really don't know how she does it either!! Just so fragile and technical! One little slip and it would be ruined! I would have no finger tips left!

It is so fascinating how people find their little techniques and ways to express themselves with the same seemingly mundane material as paper! But it makes this world so inspiring and I really love it! The bird thin is weird I agree They are just such graceful beautiful creatures and paper seems to lend itself so well to the feathers, might make myself some wings and join them in the sky! Ha, now I am going crazy!!

Yes I do have an Instagram account, its @ZackMclaughlins my name was already taken annoyingly so I added the 's' at the end It is fun on there!

Have a great day too, and thank you again so much for your lovely kind words, makes it all more the worth while. Keep up your beautiful work too and never stop creating, it's so good for the soul! Good luck with your studio, exciting! All the best to you and your family, Zack
